It's not a "must" upgrade. Mine has served me well. It has lipo cut-off and drag brake. I don't know how it's performance is on other motors but it works fine on the 27T.
There are better ESCs out there, but there are other things that could be upgraded first.

I bought and AE-2 for my kit version Wraith because I had no idea what else to buy and I got a pretty good price on it too. I am going to be using a Holmes Torque Master Expert 35T so we will see how the AE-2 performs with that. I am building my kit now and it is sloooooooow.

its a good ESC.. i wouldnt say its an upgrade.. the 2.4ghz system is easy to use though. it has a lipo cutoff and drag brake.. i run 2s 800/850mah lipo's in both my rigs. i ran my AE-2 in my ax10 and it did good with other stock electronics like servo's and stuff. i put in the hitec 7955TG steering servo and the internal BEC in this ESC couldnt handle the power... but if its just going in a scaler it will be fine.. my AE-2 went into my honcho and my novak rooster crawler ESC went into my ax10. im running 55t motors in both rigs.

I use this ESC in my SCX10 with a 27t race motor on 3s with no issues, many people are using these on 3s, just gotta run an external BEC, but you were gunna run a BEC anyway right.

I had very limited success with mine. I never ran it on 2s, but on 3s (with an external BEC) it smoked and caught fire after only maybe an hour of run time. Personally, I would sell it and put that money toward a Castle Sidewinder or something else.

I'm running the Two in both mine (35T HH) and sons( 55t Integy) rigs. Been trouble-free. I see no need for anything else in a scaler.

i'm running one in my sportsman rig on 3s with a HH 55t handwound. works good, just a little big. also ran one in my wraith on 3s with no problems. i don't think it's a MUST upgrade, but once you have everything else on the rig set up like you want another esc (like a mmp) gives alot more options. i would install a CC bec just about every esc out needs an external bec if your going to run high torque/power servos.

..which 27T race motor are you using? How long does the 27T motor last on 3S?..

A lot depends on the load. I've run various 27T motors (with NiCD & NiMH) for HOURS with no issues. But, these were mostly carpet 10th scale cars where speed was the need.

Depending on your gearbox ratios, I would think a 27T in a crawler is a wee bit on the fast side. Most of what I've seen is that a 35T is about as low as I would go in terms of turns.

The voltage in is not much of an issue, it's the load (rig weight as well as gearing) that creates heat which is wear on the motor.
