| Smoked ESC, Goop a Conductor?
So I purchased a pair of micro sidewinders from a rcc member (cant remember who??). He said that these were not up to the task of pushing his new 16t crawlmasters so he was getting fxr's. I was getting everything buttoned up today and when I hooked up the lipo the rear esc instantly smoked. I triple checked for a polarity problem but its hooked up correctly. The only reason I can come up with other than being sold a bad esc is that the goop I used to secure the esc's somehow shorted the circuit board?? Is that even possible? Its been dry for days, and is rubberized right? I filed a pp claim but ill cancel it if there is any proof that I did something wrong?? Thoughts? |

Did you buy them decased or did you pull them out of the cases? Either way I think it is not the other members fault, stuff sometimes just happens and you knew that you were getting used goods. |

The case is just shrink wrap and it was a little ratty looking so I took it off. If said member sent an esc that he knew to be defective because they were pushed too hard then.... Im not trying to accuse and I figure that the seller will see this here and offer his thoughts. I do agree that buying used electronics is a bad idea and risky but I was just trying to save a buck.. If it puffed up smoke in front of you then , it worked previously, imop If you plug it back in , does it start smoking or just does nothing ? |

Good point. When I plugged it back in while still glued to the skid it smoked until it was unplugged. Then I peeled it off the skid and took the remaining adheasive off of it and then plugged it in, it did not smoke.. Maybe it was done cooking at this point?? The main reason I did the pp claim is to make contact with the seller since I deleted the pm's between us. After some google research it turns out that goop is not conductive..

if you used Amazing Goop on that esc, i'm afraid the damage is on you.

Funny, I have a Duratrax Streak ESC that was literally dipped in Goop to make it waterproof. Yeah, ussually things let the magic smoke when they die, not after their dead. |

| Re: Smoked ESC, Goop a Conductor? I would have to agree. Ive smoked ESC's before and they work before the smoke, not after. I dont think I have ever had one smoke, and then smoke again the next time I plug it in.

me either. once they smoke they are usually done. i've seen mixed results with amazing goop. sometimes it works fine, others it will eat the circut board. i've seen the mechanics at the railroad use it and seen some of the electronics after they were done. seen a few circut boards that were almost ate clean in two from the adhesive. seen others that were perfect. they think it has alot to do with humidity in the air, and the condition of the circut boards. seems they have had good luck with NEW boards, but older ones that may have ANY marks/scratches/damage seem to go POOF.

filing a paypal claim is pretty harsh, why not just retrieve the email thats in the paypal transaction, its not his problem you forgot who you bought it from. and IMO its not his fault it smoked, i've bought ESC's from members that smoked imediatly aswell (that were proven to work before hand and from trusted sellers), tough shit, and to take the shrink wrap that was on there off before testing it and still trying to pass off responsibility.... yeah not cool.

What does taking the shrinkwrap off have to do with anything? When you buy something from an individual it is expected to work right? Besides, I trust no one If the goop is somehow responsible I take full responsibility. Doubtful though since the front esc is still gooped to the skid and works fine.. not to take sides, but lets look at facts. you bought electronics used, you hooked them up, you modified them (removing shrink wrap), you added adhesive to product. product smoked when you hooked it up. i don't think you have a case against anybody but you. now if you would have bought, had a shop hook it up WITHOUT modifying the product in any way, you may have a claim. |

Yeah, it seems that rcc agrees and I will drop the dispute and cut my losses even though im pretty sure I didnt cause the failure.. FWIW, I was on the other end of a similar situation a couple years ago when I sold a DX3R to a member here and a month or so later I get a pp claim notice and the guy says that it was hooked up and the rx didnt work. I knew 200% that it worked the day I took it out of my rig and shipped it. I basically told him to pound sand because I knew it worked when shipped. Just the nature of buying used electronics I guess..

sorry for comming off as agressive, you seem more then understanding and just fishing for information. just I think for it to be a fair claim they should have been tested as they came, not after any modifications (no matter how small) I agree that removed shrink wrap and a little glue shouldn't have caused any issues at all, it's a very unfortunate sittuation.

I just did a continuity test on wet Goop and guess what? You sure it was dry?

Yep, I put glued the esc's to the skid last Sat and just got my motors, servo and batteries in yesterday. Nearly a week, and it was dry to the touch on the outside and inside when I took it off just before I posted this. I could test continuity on in now I suppose, just out of curiosity. Edit: I poked and proded the entire area on the skid that had goop on it with the multi meter. No continuity.. Last edited by frdtrkguy; 02-10-2012 at 07:12 PM.

I have used Goop to waterproof stuff with mixed results... I coated several old Traxxas 27Mhz receivers to waterproof them, and they worked totally fine afterwards. I did the same with a castle BEC and it smoked right away as soon as I connected the battery. So I have seen it go both ways... |
