Default ESC ground/short?

On the Mamba Max (not the pro) If the bottom of the circuit board the motor wires come from (where solder spots are which I know conduct) touches metal, is it possible for it to arc and cause the ESC to act up?
I ask because the ground is touching a rail and the rig stalls when blipped repeatedly.
the lights on the MM flash as if there were no signal, but the Rx is fine as is the BEC.
With the ESC not touching any metal at all, it seems to have no issues.

Is this a possibility or is there another issue I'm not seeing?

Yes, it could be shorting various signals. Usually it would blow up the ESC, but that depends on what shorts.

It could also be the on/off switch wires starting to break off, I had a similar issue on mine.
