Default Bad electrical combo for Wraith kit?

Last week I went to a newly discovered (for me anyway) RC store. After browsing around and asking lots of questions I bought an Axial Wraith kit, with the following electronics. I went with what was suggested for me, the ideal setup being a low speed high torque crawler. Dont really have the room where I live for a high speed rig..

Axial Wraith Kit
Integy Lathe / Crawler Motor
Torquemaster ESC BR-XL
Hitec HS-5646WP Waterproof Servo
Spektrum DX2E Radio & SR200 Reciever
DTX 4600 mAh NiMH Battery

VP upper links, Axial 6x98mm lower links
3Racing AX10-12/GR Shock Absorber
Axial 1.32lb Soft Spring set AX30213
Everything else is stock. Gearing, wheels, tires, axles, etc..

I built the kit over the weekend, had had a couple small tests indoors for flex and etc, each less than 3-5 min runs. Today I took it back to the store and ran the truck for the first time on their indoor crawler course. Ran one full battery, let it charge, then on the second run about 15-20 minutes in smoke started coming from the motor. I wasnt hard on the rig, kept it at a slow crawl except for when needing short speed boost to clear and obstacle, etc..

It raised a few questions. Is there a break in procedure for motors? Is this a poor electrical combination? Is there a maximum run time for these that I'm not aware of? I assumed that because the other trucks were running constantly there shouldnt be an issue with mine. NOTE: I was the only crawler there at the time, the other trucks were shortcourse trucks on a nearby track.

I'm fairly new to all of this and need a little guidance. The ESC wasnt hot, just warm. The motor on the other hand was at 260 degrees F when hit with a temp gun after waiting for a minute or two. Now that its cooled it seems to work fine, but I havent tested for lack of performance from it..

Should also mention, from the first run the bottom of the skid pan was warm, but at the time I didnt think nothing of it. Between the first and second run when it smoked there was a 45 min - 1 hour recharge time, plenty of time for everything to cool off. All connections are soldered, and heat shrinked.

Looking at the ESC, I did get the waterproofed version. If this is the Brushless Torquemaster BR-XL ESC, would it fry a brushed motor?

More then likely you have something binding in the drive train.. Remove your motor pinion and make sure everything spins free, also check gear mesh on the pinion and spur..

Nothing in the electronic selection should be a issue..

And you really should not need any cool down period on these trucks, for the most part you can switch out the battery and just keep running..

I agree with sloppy, but if your running stock gearing, you'll be way to fast. You probably overheated the motor and it cooked.

For hard crawling, maybe try a 13t pinnion 87t spur, or something on that line.

Binding in the drivetrain
Pinion/spur mesh too tight
Overgeared
Motor not lubed

The rest should be fine, no need for cool off. Sounds like a decent combo, nothing wrong with it.

I am running the stock gearing on mine with a 35t on 3s and I have not had any heat issue's with the motor..

I dont disagree on the gearing down, I feel mine is over geared but its a lack of torque issue not heat I am noticing..

Hrm, where do I get different gears at? Doing searches only brings up stock gear ratios in plastic or metal.

Change the gearing. Try a 15t pinion and a 87t spur. That is the set up i am using with a hh 35 turn motor and i have had no problems.

I had pretty much the same issue with my Losi Comp Crawler, and step by step I've identified (and solved) some problems...
- The major problem was I got the pinion pressing against the spur. (Easy to fix once identified as a problem.)
- Improper placement of the rear axle bearings caused axial forces on them, resulting in extra drag. (Takes some extra care and mounting the parts in the right order to solve.)
- Brand new rubber sided bearings add substantial drag by themselves. (That's why it's a good idea to break them in before use, which I didn't. I'm now planning on removing some of the rubber sides to reduce drag even further.)

I'm going to guess the timing on the motor was off. Don't ask me if I've ruined a brand new armature.
