No need to change a thing, it will run NIMH as is. Its a pretty smart ESC.

Here's how to program if you don't have a Castle Link or Castle Field Programmer:
http://castlecreations.com/support/d...s_ed_guide.pdf

If you have the link plug it into laptop and configure, with card, set the red light to turn of auto LiPo to run the NIMH.

Open the instructions above and start on page 20 to enter programming mode. Then change voltage cutoff information starts on page 29. You have to go through all the settings sequentially to program. It's not bad, just need to be patient and count beeps.

if you're running NiMH then you'll want the LiPO cutoff turned off. When I ran my Castle ESC's on NiMH the packs didn't have enough punch and they kept cutting out and hitting the LVC.

Thanks Meatwad, the AE-2 is a little different than the OEM Castle's.

Chazekxt, follow those instructions instead of what I posted above. Those instructions are for regular Castle controller where the AE-2 has less options.

My AE-2 is going into LiPo shutdown, which is VERY annoying, I'm using it to control my winch. After reading through the instructions, I'm thinking that it will be worth the $25 to just get the Castle-Link.

Manual programming isn't that bad, you just have to count and remember what number you're on.

The AE-2 is not listed in the CastleLink software, which device do I use, the Sidewinder?

when you pug into the castle link it automatically detects the ESC. I ordered a castle link for my rigs and two of them run the AE-2 and both are recognized by the castle link connection.

the axial website has an instruction manual for the AE2. i used it to program the lipo cutoff and the drag brake down to 40% from the stock 100% which was crazy high.
Nook66 posted this elsewhere on the rccrawler forum:

I have worked out how to program some features of the AE-2 without using Castle Link. Like the Castle Creation SideWinder ESC, the standard way of getting into the programming mode is as follows. You may want to disconnect your motor from the ESC first to avoid the chance of a runaway.

1. Switch off the ESC
2. Switch on the transmitter and hold full throttle
3. Switch on the ESC
4. Release the throttle AFTER the second series of tones

The ESC uses tones to indicate what Options you are currently accessing and its setting. eg. Option 2 setting 3 will be "beep-beep, pause, beep-beep-beep". You accept the setting for the option by engaging full throttle, or you can go to the next setting by engaging full reverse. Once you have configured the last option, the ESC will emit a series of tones and when that is finished the settings are stored.

There are 3 Options available and here are the Settings available:

Option 1 - LiPo CutOff (I think, please test first)
Setting 1 - Off
Setting 2 - On

Option 2 - Drag Brake
Setting 1 - Off
Setting 2 to 6 - varying degree

Option 3 - Brake/Reverse type
Setting 1 - Forward-Brake-Reverse
Setting 2 - Forward and Brake only
Setting 3 - Forward and immediate reverse

For a crawler using LiPo, the setting would be:

1-2
2-6
3-3
