Default Winch switch on truck?

I've done some searching and could mostly just find switches on remotes. Is there a small on-off-reverse switch that I can mount on my truck for the winch? Ive seen a couple online but not sure if they will work. Please point me toward what I need. I don't have room on my rx or tx so this is my other option. Thanks.

if your just talking bout an on/off switch, radio shack has small switches for bout 3 bucks you can put inline on one of the wires to turn on/off.........bob

You'll need a double-pole / double-throw (DPDT) switch. If you want it to go back to center (off position) when you let go of the switch you will also need it to be a momentary DPDT.

I'm using this set up along with a small servo to control a high volt winch on my FJ40 build. Not sure but I think there may also be a thread around here somewhere with a schematic on how to wire the switch.

^ that is exactly what I'm looking for. Do you have a link to the switch you are using or is it all in the wiring?

Double pole/double throw/center off is what you need. The only drawback is that when it's in the off position the switch doesn't provide a braking function like one of the better winch controllers would.

And will a typical double pole/double throw/off give me the reverse polarity or is that where I have to do some specific wiring to get it that way?

Basically for the reverse function you wire one "pole" of the switch in the opposite polarity as the other. And Traildawg is right, no winch brake with this set up.

I found this picture on a scale train web site:

Where it says Wire B to track is where you would actually connect your winch.

It shows you how you would wire a DPDT Center Off switch to give you a polarity reversal which would let you run your winch in Forward/Stop/Reverse

As was mentioned, there is no brake effect when you stop as that would require shorting the motor connection together - something this configuration doesn't do.

Thanks for the all the good info and that diagram. So with the no braking effect - does that just mean that I could easily pull the line out by hand and that it wouldnt slow when I let off the "throttle"?

It will still show some good drag when you let off the power. It's the friction of the gears and motor that will make it slow/stop.

oh ok, i thought you wanted power off ability....

that's like taking your servo winch with it off and pulling line out, it'll come out but not very easy or fast....i'm sure it's more poundage then any of our trucks weigh to pull line out, so it seems with my servo winch......bob
