Angry Integy 35T -what pinion gear?

All i've ever ran on my scx10 (7 lbs roughly) is 35t's by Integy with a 17 tooth pinion gear. Lately it's been running hot, so hot I cant touch it without getting burned and it feels like the rig looses power gradually (running a 2s) and there is a slight burning smell at the end of my crawl (is that normal ? ) Here come the questions:

What pinion size can I change to on my 35t gain torque and still run cool? ( I don't mind loosing wheel speed )

If I run a 45t or 55t what pinion size is recommended? This might be my avenue so that I can gain some torque, but would like some advice based on experience.

Is there a thread with turns to pinion gear match and what are the results?

Thanks for the feedback fellas

Happy crawl'n

Your best bet is start with a smaller pinion and see how it does. Try a 14-15 tooth and it should run cooler without a huge loss of wheel speed. The 35t motor should be fine in the truck but the smell and heat sounds like it's geared a little high.

I don't see anything wrong with your pinion for that setup, surmising you're running a 87T spur. I'd say the motor needs a replacement. 87/17 gives you a 5.11 ratio. I'm running a higher ratio (56/13 32P) with the stock 27T Axial motor and it runs fine. I can run it solid for two hours and it never gets hot. I might be a tad lighter than 7 lbs.

Stick with a 35T motor, but a better brand.

I use the same motor and I run a 14 t pinion and 87 t spur! I had heat issues with mine as well and found my gear mesh was too tight. I adjusted that and it gets warm but not hot! So would start there!

Thanks fellas. Looks like the 35t is the way to go with a lower pinion gear. Spur gear is stock so I won't even mess with that.

I am running that set up in my shafty. Integy 35t, with a 14/87 and it barely gets warm. I run mine on 3s and it's got lots of torque for a cheap motor.

I agree that the gearing sounds right. You probably overheated the motor once and degaussed the magnets. Now you need a magnet zap to bring back the torque and keep it from overheating.

thank you gentlemen, I just picked up a 45T and a 15 pinion on my stock 87 spur. Should I go a few teeth down on the pinion?

btw, very imformative site Mr. Holmes

I run a HH 35t handwound on 2s with 24/87 gearing currently. A good handwound will last you a long time with a little care and maint. In my experience the Integy motors need work right out of the box. The comm is lumpy among other things.

I'd stick with a 14t pinion. The 24/87 is high geared for a crawler and can only be handled by a quality motor. Until you get a good motor I'd say run the 14/87. I have a HH 27T Torque Master Pro in another one of my shafty's and I run it the same 14/87 and it provides more than enough wheel speed.

Thanks! I have a pretty big list of things that still need to be added to the site, its just a matter of having 25 hours per day to get things done

Your pinion sounds fine, 15t is a great start.

I have a hh torque master 35t on my scx10, great motor. was alright on my 2.2s but trying to head in a more scale direction so I bought some 1.9s but it's just a little too slow. gearing is stock. what pinion do I need to up my speed?

Don't have a clue. The owners manual should tell you.

ok so I have the rtr honcho and it comes with 20t pinion. so I'll need to go bigger to get more wheel speed right?

Yes, as long as the motor doesn't get hot.

If speed is what you are after, either run more voltage or a lower turn motor.

Yep, but you'll need to pick up a bec to keep your servo voltage up, otherwise you will more than likely brown out and shut down.
