Default Axial Vanguard Motor and ESC

As featured in the June press release email from Axial.

2900KV motor Axial Racing - Brushless 2900KV Electric Motor

AE-3 ESC Axial Racing - AE-3 Vanguard ESC

Now for my question, can anyone find me a release date?

I think this is just what I had in mind for the Wraith build I am planning, and I already have a Castle Link. Thanks for any additional info.

I talked to my LHS today and he said mid July.

Thanks

My LHS said it wasn't in their distributors system yet. Could you hazard a guess as to the street price?

That looks like a rebadged sidewinder and a 2 pole motor. I do not think it would be a good choice in a crawler. The MMP is sensored, and with a motor that is also sensored is a great combo. I think that combo would be OK in a 2x4 short course truck, but not to well in a crawler. If you want castle, the sidewinder sct kit with the 4 pole 3800 motor works OK for a non sensored system.

Thanks for the heads up Violator. I will definintely look into that. My questions is, I was planning on my Wraith being a back six and mat it kind of truck. Just bashing and trails, no crawling. Do you think this would be an acceptable choice? I figure if it doesn't work out well, I could always just put it in my Slash.

I don't see the point in waiting for these when you could easily buy a castle sv2 with is basically the same with higher amp rating and find a suitable brushless motor to pair with it

I won't be starting my Wraith build for some time. I was considering them if they are available when I round up parts. If they aren't, I dont plan on waiting for them. If they are, I would like to support Axial. They have been good to me so far. Not so good to my bank account though.

Sounds like the Exo? And maybe Wraith will be coming in brushless RTR editions..... The motor may be fun at the right price... No interest in the esc from me though... There are proven esc's out there already that I trust and/or would rather have... But again, for the right price it might end up a bargain...

Check the COMPATIBILITY link on both products, it only lists the EXO, so this doesn't seem to be intended for crawlers or scalers.

Aren't both ESCs rated at 100 amps?
I think the AE-3 is just a rebadged SV2. Same amp limit, same specs.
Duratrax and HPI are doing the same thing with the SV2.
The MMP might have made a better choice for a corporate wide change to brushless with its sensor port; Losi and HPI are rebadging the MMP, and now Traxxas seems to be getting ready to rebadge the MMP too.
Then again, if Axial does ship these ESCs in their RTRs, they may be in brushed mode in crawler and scaler models.

If they were the same as the sv2 its motor limit wouldn't be so low. It is only rated to the 2900kv motor on 3s but the sv2 can handle the 4600 and 5700 on 3s and the axial esc is only rated to 4200 on 2s where the sv2 can do the 6900kv on 2s iirc. It's just another instance where the external case is the same, internally likely very similar but just not a high of amp handling. Traxxas does have an esc that at least shares the same case as the mmp, it's in their new funny car but it has more programming in it just for the funny car

I think its motor limits have more to do with what Axial plans on selling rather than what the ESC could actually handle. I wouldn't be surprised if Axial comes out with a 4200kv motor soon for 2s running. But a 4200kv should be 3s capable too.

A 2 pole 2900kv motor should be about a 10.5T brushless and would probably draw around 35 amps on 3s, while a 2 pole 4200kv should be a 7.5T brushless and draw around 45 amps on 3s.
Axial states a 100amp rating in their product info.

It doesn't make sense to me for Axial to take a Castle product, downgrade it to not handle the same output and expect customers to pay more.

I shouldn't have mentioned the upcoming Traxxas ET-3s, as its not out yet and really unknown if it is a MMP or not, but if it looks like a duck...

We'll find out for certain when it is released.

The esc looks somewhat promising, depending on street price. Although the motor... eh. Its saving grace is the low kv range. There's a reason castle disco'ed the 2 pole cm36 line in favor of the new 4 pole motors.

Pretty much the exact same, except for the price. The AE-3 is almost twice as much as the SV3.
