Schottky Diodes or similar...?
 

Sooo...I recently got a Novak Eiger ESC and 35t Rock Star combo. So far so good, followed the instructions and wired it exactly to the diagram provided. It came with 3 diodes, no where in the instructions did it mention anything about installing them??? Do they need to be used and what are they for? I'm running 2 cell Lipo's on my LCC and everything works fine and I'm happy with the set up. I just don't want to ruin anything so I want to make sure its set up properly. I found some installs but no clear reason why people install them...please enlighten me!

Schottky Diodes are for forward only speed controls....you don't want to put them on an ESC that you intend to use reverse. Unless Novak has found some new magical Schottky Diode that works both ways.....I am guessing they are motor caps, but if you have a 2.4ghz radio, I would not even worry about installing them.

Old gag we used to do in the racing days was to solder on the Schottky Diode backwards.....always sounded like a firecracker when it gave.

Got ya, I'll still search around because Id like to unserstand the concept but Infigured they weren't in the instructions and I figured they were there for people who already knew what they were. Or maybe Novak just includes the same "kit" of diodes, shrink tube, double sided ESC sticky stuff in every kit rather then custom make parts kits for every different combo.

Think of those capacitors like the noise suppressors you would use in an auto's ignition system to keep the AM radio from buzzing. OK, I know that dates back to the 60s and earlier but it's the same concept to filter out unwanted EMF from interfering with the radio.

If they ARE motor caps (really needed for AM & FM radios, not needed for 2.4ghz but won't hurt either) they should be ~1/8" squares ~1/16" thick with 2 thin leads coming out 2 adjacent corners.

Yes, they are for noise suppression for older radios. It used to be:
1-went from one brush hood to the can
1-went from the other brush hood to the can
The last went between the 2 brush hoods.
All connections were soldered.

A lot of newer motors have the motor diodes on a PC board on the end of the motor, it's easy to miss them.

They could be different diodes though, does the manual state what they are?

In my 1975 Nova w/5L V-8, the popping in the radio was my clue it was time for new plugs (I ran Sorenson MonoMag solid wires 8)).
