wp xl-5 esc with external bec ??

will the wp xl-5 run a external bec??????

ive read that they do and dont, some say the brown older 1 works but the blue case wp will not.

so i looked and i havent found a consistant answer


anyone know from experience


xl-5 has internal 1a 6v bec but i want to cut red and add a 5a 5.5v bec

Running an external BEC is not a choice for the ESC to make. Once you pull/cut the red, it can no longer power the receiver. Every ESC I've ever seen will continue to power itself from the battery you plug into it, I'd imagine the XL-5's the same way.

On many ESCs from Castle, Tekin, Novak, etc, you would program them through the receiver connector (with the appropriate link/card/interface), but I've never seen anything that can program an XL-5, so if you wanna cut it, go for it. If you're still unsure, you can use a pin/hobby knife to lift the tab and slide the metal connector out versus cutting.

Creationfab and Holmes Hobbies both sell a bypass adapter for $5-$6 (last time I checked) that allows you to plug your BEC straight into the servo, and continue to let the ESC power the receiver, if that appeals to you.

But I think you'll be fine pulling out the red and going the route you're headed.

The problem with the blue case xl5 you are thinking of is with the Novak smart stop lipo cutoff. It didn't usually work with the blue case xl5 but the yellow case did. An external bec will work with all current or semi current esc out there tmk

A friend of mine did. It worked just fine until the BEC fried, but that was due to a faulty BEC
