I want to think you for posting this, i am sorry to see if happen, but it is good to have a reminder of how dangerous these packs can be. not saying don;t use them, just use with caution. I know i have gotten lax is how i charge, that will be changing.

After the smoke issue is it safe to re-use the lipo bag if in decent condition?

I would say no, lipo bags are cheap, i am betting the protection level is gone, kinda like not using a helmet again after a wreck.

Do you use balance plug? Here's why, I bought a used charger and lipos off local club guy and when I got home realized it didn't even have a balance plug. Long story short I refuse to use this thing for lipos because of risk of such fires. Am I wrong in thinking this? Two packs came with charger and are swelled, is this a result of no balance plug or something else? One has a melted deans connector on it...

sound abused to me, balancing is important one sell may charger fast then another allowing you to over charge it. balancing not only monitors the cell, but it also puts a small load on it as needed to help insure a even charge.

I am curious of your charge amp rate (how many amps?)
Does your speed control have a lipo low voltage cutoff & what is the voltage its set @?
I assume from your count of cycles you bought it new.

I started using a separate LVD on my rig. I am pretty attentive to my cell voltages after a run, and i found that a few times, one cell would dip low. Although the combined cell voltage was as expected, 3.3V x 3, so 10V, one of the cells was down in the 2.95 range. Thats kind of dangerous. My new LVD alarms if ANY cell drops below 3.3v, not if the combined voltage drops.

I charge in the house, but I am always in the room with it. I think I will get a bag now.

The cheap LVD alarm ($4) is money well spent. And the fact i can see it through the windshield and read my remaining charge is nerdgasmic.

I always balance charge mine at half of their charge current or at 1.5 amps, whichever is less, as I am not in a rush to get them done, and because I have had enough problems with military radio batteries I know to be wary of them all the time.

The minute one puffs or receives a good whack and gets damaged, it's discharged and off to the recycling centre. It's not worth running the risk with them, as you can see, they can turn around and bite you back.
