Talking The end of Lipo's! --> Graphene Capacitor

Graphene Capacitors in RC. Imagine the possibilities. As an example, the battery could be intagated to the chassis or you could use them as "NOS" type turbo via a click on CH3.

I bet on the end of lipo's in a couple of years...

Does this post count as a patent?

There are a bunch of universities working on stuff like this. It needs to get to the public and have companies that can make money on it before it takes off though.

I actually read an article about a laptop MIT had powered with some similar capacitors. It took 5 seconds to charge and ran for about 20 minutes.

Amazing! How cool would that be?

i think it will be a while before we see anything like that. Look at the auto industry, they still use old battery technology to start gas cars. Why not Lipo? should have happen years ago.

Because LiPo is not safe. I already am using LiFe batteries in my race bike. I had to buy a special charger for it. What do you think would happen if you told EVERY mechanic in the world they had to buy a new battery charger just to charge a special battery, and if you do it wrong it will explode. Or what about the DIYer that charges his own battery improperly and burns his house down? Can you jump start a LiPo? Does your car have a low voltage cut off?

It all boils down to being too much risk for not enough reward.

Lead acid batteries and even Gel cel batteries are designed to take abuse, be misused, undercharged, overcharged and generally used in a way that would cause a LiPo to catch fire.

Lipo's also have heat restrictions a cars motor would definitely exceed those limits

two thoughts,

capacitors > sometimes their weight to watthours ratio is not that great, also the voltage drops as an e-function

car batteries > you can use LiPos for that, be aware that in cold weather the usable capacity drops.

cheers

LiPo is not suitable for car batteries.
One of the major factors is the (battery's) voltage sensitivity:
- At voltages >3.8V the cell lose capacity permanently way too fast (which is why they're not to be stored fully charged).
- At voltages <2.8V the cell lose capacity even faster.

A car battery must put up with a wider range of voltages both during driving and when the car is parked.

I didnt read any of the articles posted, but i know the journal article submitted by the ucla team working on the project is only claiming a energy capacity of about 1/300 of a lipo pack based on size. Its a huge improvement over current capacitor technology, but no where near enough to become a valid replacement for even alkaline batteries at the moment. That being said, the concept is definitely facinating, and it will be interesting to see where it progresses in the future
