Default Sparking Tekin motor...

So I've had this Tekin FXR combo a while now for my SCX10 but haven't used it...it's brand new.

After doing a water break in and re-oiling etc... The motor seems to spark quite a lot :S

The esc is set to instant reverse and max drag brake so I can understand a little sparking...however there is quite a lot of "crackling" upon acceleration, very large flashes when throttle is released, and even larger sparks when going into instant reverse...

Is there something I can do to stop this??

1-I wish everyone would stop doing "water break in".....
2-Make sure the brushes slide freely. There may now be crap in the brush hoods which is hanging up the brushes so they have light tension against the comm.

[water break in was "sorta useful" with older motors & hard brushes....done wrong, it's a fast way to kill a comm.]

I'd take the motor to someone with a comm lathe and pray they can repair the damage you caused with some life left in the comm. Gonna need fresh brushes also. Then never do water break in again.

The tekins come with a 729/766 Quasar style brush, which is probably the worst brush to attempt to use water break in on.....you have basically screwed the motor up at this point. Like mudcat said, find someone with a comm lathe and score some new brushes.......and hope you didn't kill the armature.

Why people continue to attempt this is beyond me, I know tekin doesn't include it in their instructions to use water to break it in....

Mine was doing exactly this, but I didn't do much of any break in at all, just installed it straight up and went easy for the first few minutes. I emailed Jon (this was on a Torquemaster Pro), and I was told the timing may have been too close to zero, and I might need to add some advance timing to it.

Oh, in that case, when you send your motor in for a rebuild, drop a note about the sparking and crackling, and ask the rebuilder of your choice to check the timing for ya.

Hmmm... I didn't know water break ins were so bad :S damnit.

Just to clarify also, the motor was sparking well before I did the break in as well. I had the whole truck setup and ready to run to make sure it was all good. When I first got the electronics I wired everything up to make sure it worked and it was sparking right out the box :/

Motor capacitors were REQUIRED for AM & FM radios. Not so much for 2.4ghz.

If you had them on a 2.4ghz, it's not an issue, may not help, won't hurt.

Just an update:

I took the motor to a mate of mine who machined the com. We de a dry break in and all seems to be fixed!

Still unsure why it was sparking from new but all is good now.
