| Need help choosing motor and esc
I need help choosing a motor and esc. I was going to choose a Holmes hobbies 35t motor and esc but I wanted know if this is a good motor and esc and what's some other good motors and esc. My crawler will be approximately 10-11 lbs, running a summit 2 speed tranny, wraith rear axle, slash 4x4 front differential. I want it to crawl good but have some good speed.

35t or a brushless will give you speed on 11.1lipo. Holmes esc = great esc Others like my preferred Tekin fx-r is also great. If you want even more speed both above will handle 4s lipos (Fxr needs a 20v cap for 4s) What to pick. Well that's the hard part you need to figure out. I did pick fxr for size and weight, it's really small! |

I agree with nitrooxide, it's entirely subjective. Everyone has their own preferences and experience with all the different electronics out there. That said, I can tell you what I really like. I have had FX-Rs, MMPs, a Traxxas XL-5 and the old stock Axial ESC. As said the FX-R is a great ESC and small/easy to fit on your chassis. For a brushed ESC, It's one of the best. The MMP is by far and away my favorite ESC. It's strong and has a ton of programming options. I potted mine in epoxy to waterproof it (Holmes hobbies does it for $10 too). I now run brushless motors and nobody will convince me to go back. In my experience, brushless motors are plenty smooth on the bottom end when sensored, and the drag brake is also strong. They also give a ton more wheelspeed with less heat than a brushed motor (Again, that is in my experience). I run 18.5T Novak crawlers. The maintenance is much less. When I am hammering on it and leaving it pinned, there is less worry about overheating or burning up the brushes. It also does better in mud/water, imo. No stuttering/missing when you are in the drink. Let me point out one more thing: I've never bought a quality brushed motor. I always wanted a good Holmes or Brood motor, but never had one. So my opinions on brushed/brushless are based on cheap Integy/Novak/throw away motors. FWIW. Last edited by hibbs; 01-27-2013 at 07:28 AM. |

I've seen every one running brushless motors and have given it a thought especially since tekin released there brushless crawler motor. I particularly don't like tekin fx-r's, I ran a tekin fx-r with a tekin 45t 15t pinion and an 87 spur gear with a three cell and yes I had a cap on it and limited the current through the settings but smoked it. What motor and speed control would you guys recommend for brushless. I don't know to much about brushles, only thing I have that is brushless is a stock 2 wd slash vxl.

For my Scalers that see water I run either the FXR(small and easy to put in a WP box) to 35t Tekin motor or the WP BRXL to a HH 27t or 20t motor. Plenty of torque and wheelspeed on 3s with any of theses. For my Wraith that will only be splashed with water at times but never submerged I run the MMP with a 13.5 Tekin Redline. Very smooth with crawling and more speed than I can use. I would recommend a brushed setup for rigs that see water on the trails and Brushless if you stay away from the water. At double the cost or more of a brushed motor, the Brushless are too expensive for me to let get waterlogged. You can WP the Brushless system but I still rather not chance it. Good luck on your selection. |

the FXR is a great esc . So compact it can fit in many small spaces and is easy to keep dry .
