did a hung motor fry my Micro Sidewinder?
 

So I was out with my mini and was getting some strange binding that I had not noticed before... I ran it for a little while thinking it was the plastic center gear in my trans.

So when I got home, I swapped in a new trans that I had prebuilt with metal gears.
I hooked everything back up and proceed to test the setup.

I applied throttle and nothing happened so I gave it more throttle and suddenly, my esc let the smoke out.

I took the motor apart and the mount screw had pushed into the winding!
It nicked a few of the wires, one of them pretty deep.

Could this "hung" motor be why my esc fried?
If not, it may have gotten wet when I removed the balloon it was in... or a crossed exposed wire or something... it was running fine up till the trans swap.

Also, is the motor ok with the nicked wires?
I assume it is.

It very may well of caused it.

If the nicks are just simple nicks, then in theory it could be ok. That looks pretty mushed together, which often makes the wires touch and causes a short. In the end, if the motor caused the ESC to go boom, it's probably toast too.

Looks like a big fat short to me. Time to go motor/esc shopping.

When you say "makes the wires touch", do you mean the wires touched the screw/can and that caused the short?

No, your wires on the arm basically form a coil. The wire is coated with an insulation that keeps them seperate. When stuff gets in the can and hits the wires, often it mangles the wire together as the insulation comes off as copper is a soft metal. This creates a short in the arm....

From your picture, the wire looks pretty mangled, so its likely they are touching....
