Default very confused, please help 3s, 4s, 6s?

So I want more speed out of my Ridgecrest. All stock right now and I truly love it I just want gobs of power and speed. So I was going to just get a hh21t motor and be done with it, not so quick! I started reading about "volt up, gear down". So if I was to get hh BRXL ( nothing but good reviews) then get new batt (currently running 2s) like 4,6s then what do I do about a motor? is it better to get a 45 turn and up the gearing or get a 27 turn and (possibly) the same gears? I'm really confused about it all.

thanks for helping me catch my friends p4de

a 27t on a 3s will give you tons of wheel speed and the torque when you need it. its what i run in mine, just something to think about

by using 3s can I get a set up that is "easier" on the motor? My way of thinking (not proven just a guess) would be that I could run say 4s and a 35T or 45T and change the gearing UP to get speed. That is what I'm confused about?

You are limited by the esc as far as how many cells you run. Some esc may only handle 2 or 3 cell. Which one are you using.

If your current ESC will handle it, just jump up to a 3S LiPO. You may end up dropping a couple of teeth on the pinion to account for the ~50% increase in power available.
Later on, you may want to replace the motor.

Look to see what others are running/recommending in the rig.

If all you want is more speed go brushless with a Tekin 13.5 or pro4. But you can still crawl with these motors too. Got to 3s and hold on!

charging isn't a problem I have a iCharger206b. If I went over 3s I would buy the hh BRXL esc and that should handel my needs. I don't want just speed so brushless isn't for me. Is this a good way of thinking? get a 55t motor and put taller gears in it ? thinking that a motor will have plenty of power to run the taller gears and still crawl? that seems to make more sense than using a 21t motor and lower gears.. Dunno what makes more sense. I will use Holmes Hobbies, I like and want to support him. his brxl esc has very good reviews'

my ax 10 is on a 20t hand wound holmes motor with a brxl running 4cell the wheel speed is epic to say the least but she crawls like its a 55t on 2s still best of both worlds

i run the brxl and torquemaster sport in a wraith on 2s. geared it down and its a crawling machine. not much for speed since the gearing though. waiting on my 3 cells to come in and get that part back.

well last night I was using a buddies p4de and I think that speed is killer but....there are good reasons NOT to go brushless. I'm going to get 4S for the ridge. And I just might keep my eyes peeled for a 20T pro motor.... Have to wait and see what happens with 4s first.

ok, 4s it is would someone make a recommendation on what are good specs of a batt and where I can find one?? I'm guessing Maxx Amp are top notch but WOW, I didn't want to spend $200 on a battery.

you gotta think about trade offs. going 4s means alot heavier battery. the heavier the battery the more power you need, AND the added weight hurts crawling abilities. if your looking for a fun basher then by all means volt that baby up, but if your looking to do some actual crawling that 4s battery may hurt performance. usually in crawlers 3s is a good compromise. it gives you power for some wheelspeed when geared right, power for wheel turning torque, and the overall weight (while still heavy) is more on the manageable side.

I think you will find very few here that would recommend buying ANY MaxAmps packs.

I run Elite packs for ~850mah & up, ThunderPower for smaller packs.
The lower the mah, the higher you need in "C" rating.
I get all my packs through www.CheapBatteryPacks.com

There are other brands peeps use here, but I don't run them so won't comment one way or the other on them.

PS, yes, a 4S is heavier than a 3S. Since these are LiPO's, the actual weight is not much compared to a lead-acid car battery.

4s lippo on it's way here. I bought a Racers edge 5400 mah 75c batt from RPP. Granted it wasn't cheap but what ya goin' to do? I searched till my eyes hurt. I do appreciate all that people have done to help me out. Being a little clueless of how low I could go with "c" ratings i went big to stay safe, in fact I went as large as I could find (except Maxx amp). So now I'm waiting for BRXL esc , Trail master (27T) and my new battery!!! I've already installed all the other goodies ( new Hitec servo, aluminum horn, ARB front diff cover, new axles, aluminum knuckles, Irok tires on Mayhem wheels) think I'm just about done with the upgrades for the meantime.

I'll keep you posted on how she goes. Thanks for all the help and support!

In big batteries like that you can go as low as 25C, its more the smaller maH packs that the C rating makes more of a difference. You should get some seriously long run times out of that battery.

that will be good nice to have a batt that will last. I don't know about the new set up yet if it's not what I want I'll get another motor now that I have a good speed controller and batt.

Sensored brushless gives the best of both worlds. I have swapped all my trucks over to it, and don't really have a need to go otherwise. The only con to it, is they dont really like moisture that much.

If you need more speed still, you may want to consider the rc4wd wraith 2 spd trans. I just put one in my wraith and it helps keep things even more under control.
