Default Motor questions

I'm having issues withe my motors on my wraith. It is heavily modified. I've run a 35t monster motor witch I burned up. So I upgraded to a 45t Novak rockstar. Now it smells like it was going to burn up. My question is what am I doing wrong. I do feel like I have resistance through the drive train. Why am I burning up motors?

Anyone have any ideas that I'm screwing up.

Hot motors are usually:

Binding in the drivetrain
Overgeared motor (too small a spur or too large a pinion)
Too fast a motor for the application

Since you have "higher wind motors", I will lean towards overgeared or drivetrain binding

I've changed gears out on the motor from 20 tooth to 18 and I think a 16. I don't remember having the motor get so hot that it smelt like it was on fire when I had the 16 tooth on it. But I now have two front curry axels on my rig now so I thought the heavier weight might be causing excess motor heat.

A bit of extra weight is NOTHING compared to:

Overgearing (trying to get too much speed)
Drivetrain binding
Too tight a pinion/spur gear mesh

Just saying.

Once a motor has gotten too hot, you likely damage the windings as well as weaken the magnets. The only fix is to replace stuff (armature or whole motor).

I agree with what they said, the binding. Disconnect your driveshafts and spin your axles by hand they should spin freely same with your gearbox (gearbox is usually stiffer) that will elimate a drive bind. When setting up your pinion spur gear mesh use a piece of paper so you have just a tiny amount of give betweem the gears, your motor choice is fine I use 35t with no issue. Your weight is not a issue I run a full tube with weighted axles whatare you running for a esc? are you running 3s batteries or higher? first check the simple stuff like the axles to make sure they spin freely.

I didn't know if the weight would affect it that much or not.

So what way do you recommend for the proper gearing? It sounds like I'm geared too high for the motor. I have stock gears in the diff and I can go down to a 16 gear on the motor. What gear would you recommend for the diff?

You should look in the Wraith section and see what they run for motors & gearing.

You're using stock spur gear? 80/16 gearing is fairly low, you shouldn't have trouble with that. Take the pinion off the motor and see how freely the truck rolls. It should roll super easy.

I want to put a brushless motor and ESC combo in but, I don't know what would be a good one. I've looked into a goat 3s and 21.5 motor. I'm also looking into a mamba pro. Any suggestions?
