Default Trouble with HiTec 5086WP servo

Anyone here have any experience with the Hitec digital servos?
I just installed a 5086 Waterproof servo as the gear changer in a TF2 and managed to burn it out during setup. I'm using it with a Spectrum DX3R and had trouble getting the end points where I wanted them. Does anyone know if you need the hitec servo programmer to do this? Seems like a simple task but the atv's weren't having any effect.
