I tried using a 3S pack on my rig for the first time today. (CC01, 55t motor, 4:1 GRU, cheap Bluebird servo) Just running on flat ground, testing, the ESC got hot and hit the thermal shutdown within a few minutes. Is this at all common? Could the servo be overloading the internal BEC, even on flat ground?

No way you should never need a bec. My sister in laws baby cousin tracy said never use a bec.

The internal on a fxr will never handle a 3s. Too much power!

I run a fxr in all my rigs, half of them running 4s, the wraith an scx love it! The XR is a little too much on 4s, but will jump a 3-4' gap.. All running a cc bec. Its the ONLY way to go! |

Not trying to change the world, just stating that the ESC Is rated for 3S. I've used external BECs in my rigs, so I understand the benefits. So...I suppose I could rephrase the question this way: "Why do my external 3a BECs not overheat and shut down like my built in 3a BEC?" As an extra piece of info, the FXR would get a little warm just being plugged in to the 3S pack, with the rig stationary.

The reason they get so hot is the internal BEC has a hard time lowering the 3s battery down to 4.8 or 6 or what ever it is voltage. That is where most of the heat comes from. Run 2s and you probably will not have heat issues. You still will not have any power to run your servo, and it will brown out from time to time, but it probably will not get hot.

Stuck the BEC in the rig and ran the crap out of it. ESC temp was 10 degrees over ambient, much as it was at idle on 3S. Much better.

It was less sarcastic, however. ;-P
