I'm curious as to why this would be necessary. The stock cap is good for 16v. Is it a capacity thing?

4s puts the voltage over the stock caps rating

^^^^ yes, a 4s is 16.6v average.. its higher when fully charged..

The 4s caps work great! My scx, XR, and wraith had one before I went brushless. Ax is next to get one. For those just in case an why the Hell not runs...

just like they said^^^^...puts the voltage over the stock cap just to have that extra insurance or if u really want to run 4s.also helps with the internal bec which i dont care for i run a cc 10amp bec..helps with the heat as well.lots of benefits over stock cap..

Makes sense. Thanks. Careful when you say you don't want to run a CC BEC. Some guys around here have hissy fits if you say that!

The CI 4s Cap is a 1000uf 25Volt, I looked this weekend & Radio shack has 1000uf 35
Volts in stock.
Is that close enough>
I am buying a used FXR with no Cap & plan on running 3s 35T-55T.

If I remember from the reading I did, the more important side was the heat rating.. 85°c wasn't recommended. Yes, it would get you by but for how long??? Make sure when ur looking, that it has a 105°c rating..
The first 5 I picked up were 1000uf/ 105°c/ 25v
I just got 10x 4700uf/ 105°c/ 25v for 8$... happy "bidding"

Thanks, that was my thoughts when I finally found some specs on the 1000uf 25v's CI is selling. The high temp ratings made me wonder. I got some coming so I don't have to wonder. The RS 1000uf 35v is working good so far with no temp worries so far. I will keep it on till the others come in.

The purpose of the larger physical 4S cap is to control the voltage spikes better than the stock cap. I had plenty of stock caps fail and take the esc's with them. They sound and look like a party favor going off when they explode. I had many do it on 3S voltage.

I also highly suggest a BEC to be used with the capacitor. Tekin esc's are designed to dissipate heat through the wires since it has no heat sink. The less the esc has to do, the better it will perform and run cooler.

One drawback I have found to running 4S with the 4S cap on FXR and FXR Pro ESC's; that overtime they damage the circuit board. Even though the ESC can handle 4S, it's hard on it. I typically get about 18 months from a tekin esc on 4S.

18 months on a Tekin with 4s?
YIKES. Mine have been going strong for three years now with a mix of 3s and 4s duties.
Hmmmmm. Maybe time to start thinking about a backup..
I love my 4s packs and how smooth they make the FXRs run..

The 4s cap mod also works on the RS (Don't think that was mentioned). Like bigstu, I run a mix of 3s and 4s. Mostly 3s because 14.8 volts is alot of juice, still makes me nervous.

To make life easier, I ordered a few of the CI caps.

Works like a champ.
