Winch electronics question

How do most winches get their power? From a separate battery pack or from the main battery? Also how do you control it. Manually or by 3rd channel..?

I have a 3 channel dx3e and I'm using the 3rd channel to operate a shift servo. Can i control the winch off that 3rd channel by using some sort of toggle or manual switch so I can use the radio to pay out or reel in the winch cable. So basically hit the switch which disables the shift servo and sends a signal to the winch instead giving me remote control.

i run mine with a seperate battery pack , others use the 3rd channel. check out "HEYOK" he makes some nice winch contrllers

The toggle switch idea works well. When you need to winch, you will have to touch your rig anyway, so just throw the switch from the shifter position to the winch position. When you are finished winching, just flip the switch back. I can make you this switch with the servo connectors on it so all you have to do is plug it in - no soldering needed.

What's working for me is a servo winch controlled by a mini 10amp brushed esc powered by a dedicated ccbec set to 8v from the main 3s pack. A momentary 3pos switch makes the driveability awesome during winching.

Or one can purchase a remote controlled winch at RC4WD. It's a cheaters way of adding a forth channel
