need advise, sensorless 550 2-pole 3300kv or sensored 540 4-pole 3300kv

hey guys, I need help for a new motor for my 8lb wraith, cant decide if going for a 550 sensorless 2-pole or a sensored 540 4-pole on the same 3300kv. I'll be using 3S life batts 4500mah 30c 9.9v and a 120a ESC BHR

I'd love a 550 4-pole sensored but they're just too expensive for me now, the rig its been used 80% bashing and 20% crawling (or less).

if someone has a recommendation for a cheap / budget sensored 550 motor please advise.
price range is $60 max.

Any non-sensored motor will not be a good choice to crawl with period. It will cog very badly. With that being said if your bashing more like you said that would ba a lot of motor for a wraith but also alot of fun!!! With either motor you better have funds to upgrade drivtrain!!! Cause your gonna break it!!! Lockers, gears for tranny and axles and driveshafts to start. Just my 2 cents.

Re: need advise, sensorless 550 2-pole 3300kv or sensored 540 4-pole 3300kv

You will not want to run a non sensored motor. You would be better off with a Brood 550 brushed motor. The stump humper. Otherwise you might be stuck with a 540 motor. A cheap sensored 17.5 motor would probably be a best bet. Otherwise, you should save up for a pro4 3300.

Like mammoth said, if you go with big power be sure to upgrade the rest of the wraith.

On a side note, if your in Calexico, we just had a new hobby shop open in Yuma. He actually has wraiths in stock!! And slowly gathering parts for us crawler guys. The owners just ran in their first G6, so now I believe they are hooked. Shoot me a PM if you want more info.

For cheap sensored 550 4 pole brushless motor, try tenshock SC411 3500kv, should be about $60-70 bucks, pretty good motor.

I had a Tekin Redline 13.5T on my wraith before (with RC4wd 2speed tranny) good fun when going fast and very crawlable, with single speed tranny, I think 17.5T will be better.

Re: need advise, sensorless 550 2-pole 3300kv or sensored 540 4-pole 3300kv

@mamooth , I come from a 550 brushed motor and lot fun on trailruns and some small crawling but I cant help myself Im a basher and need more power, right now Im running a BHR 120a ESC and ripper 540 3300kv this combo dont cogg at all and its fun but still slow for my liking , runs 14 mph and needs more torque in some hill climbs
Drivetrain it partially upgraded with metal gears on tranny , MIPs CCVD

@violator, Im actually in Mexico ( baja) in the border with Calexico, and I know some zones in Yuma (palmas mall and airport zone) , send me info about that new LHS

@Colgout , where I can find that motor at that price ? All Tenshock I've found cost no less than $100

Here you go....

Tenshock Short Course Motor SC411 3500KV 4 Pole Sensored RC CAR Brushless Motor | eBay

I know this is Australia ebay (that's where I am at).... But usually we buy RC stuffs dearer than US, so I guess if you look harder you will be able found them at a lower price. I would not pay $100 for Tenshock, I would rather pay more for Tekin. Tekin resale better....

that tenshock looks good, but how power hungry is?
do I need a high C lipo for ir and a 120a minimum? I hear that the big name brands in brushless motors need high C lipos to deliver the amp to the system and normally they eat lipos here and there.

Calderwood 06-18-2013 01:57 PM

A 3656sd would be even better than the tenshock. I love the one in my wraith. http://www.rccrawler.com/forum/non-c...-tenshock.html

I actually heard about those motors some days ago, but a lot of people say they eat Lipos for lunch everyday they need really good Lipo batteries to stand up the amps needed.
that xerum are top qualityof HW, what about this model?

That's not sensored. You need the xerun line which is sensored. My 3656sd will bump the lvc if the pack isn't capable of 100a+. I don't know if that qualifies as a "lipo eater" or not.

Re: need advise, sensorless 550 2-pole 3300kv or sensored 540 4-pole 3300kv

I ran a Tenshock SC411 4000kv in my Wraith on 2s for a while and liked it. Plenty of power and lots of speed when needed. I ran it with the BrushlessHobbies 120A Pro. I tried it with my MMP and it was great too. You do have to shave the upper link mount down a little to get the 550 to fit.

I'd definitely stick with something sensored if you want to have any kind of control. The BHR esc is very smooth regardless of motor, but you definitely want to take advantage of the sensored stuff. I also ran a Novak 17.5 and that's actually in my son's Wraith with a MMP. That motor was $37 brand new on eBay (new old stock) and is a great motor for the truck. It could be a little faster, but power and economy (it runs forever on a pack) is excellent.

I wish I could find a motor with those specs at $37.00 dls !!

@nigels, now that you talk about LVC at 100amps, how that works?
if my ESC is 120a I dont have to worry on what kind of battery Im using because I will always have 120amp on the ESC or battery quality and mah/C play in someway with the 100amps your system require?

so, lets say. my ESC is rated 80a but my batts are 5000mah 50c how many amps that combo will support?

case B, my ESC is 120a but my batts are 4000mah 20c, same question

thanks.

even though this motor its not sensored it looks good for the price and also for my bashing needs... $60 and free shipping but looking at the specs sheet the 3400kv size says 130 amx amps, what does that means?
will my 120a ESC and my 4500mah 30c give that amps that this motor require? or am I reading the info wrong?

Yes your max current (AMP) available is limited by the battery. Your 120A ESC mean it can handle 120A const, much more at peak. But it does not mean you will have that current if you use a small crawler pack (say 350 mah at 50c) the battery can only produce 17.5 amp max before the voltage will drop.

so, lets say. my ESC is rated 80a but my batts are 5000mah 50c how many amps that combo will support? 80A const, if your motor pull more and the battery can support it, your ESC will let you know it can't handle it, usually via visual warning (smoke ;-)). Although the peak amp that a esc can handle usually a lot higher than the rated amp.

case B, my ESC is 120a but my batts are 4000mah 20c, same question
Also 80A (4000mAH x 20c), if your motor pull more constantly, your battery is most likely to drop volt or visual warning too (puffing ;-)). Again, the peak C rating of the battery usually is a lot higher than the const C rating.
thanks.

thanks Colgout, very informative and clear, I can say that now I know how to look for a motor that suite my actual electronics.

well, now lets see if I can find a 4-pole sensored motor not too much power hungry and not too expensive LOL..

Re: need advise, sensorless 550 2-pole 3300kv or sensored 540 4-pole 3300kv

I did some testing with my both 2-pole BL motors I currently have:
on my wraith I get the next speed runs using a 9.9v life 4500mah 30c batt

3300kv 540 size, gearing 54/12 = 13 mph and low end torque slow.

2700kv 550 size, gearing 56/18 = 16.7 mph and much better low end torque, I could even lift one of my front tires off the ground ( 2"-3") for the first time on this rig. with this motor it also performed a stoppie lifting the rear end 5"-6" off the ground and next stoppie was a full roll over to the front.

yes I know the diff it could be the higher gearing on both, I have never used a 4-pole 540 size motor to see what it can do, but according to those findings I will be happy with bit more of the power/torque that 550 motor gave me.

my friend, that motor looks really good, I will run in sandy conditions mostly, desert terrains and beach, and also want to do some FOFF runs from time to time, I've read that when the tires have more traction the motor pulls more amps to keep the speed, so.. would this motor fry my 120a ESC with 4500 30c batts in 15 minutes FOFF runs in uphills?

what gearing do you recommend to keep the amps draw low and temps cool on 54 32p spur?

12, 13 or 15 will be ok?

It will work great in those conditions especially since It's a sealed motor. I have run 54/14 and that would be great for the foff stuff but didn't crawl quite as well as I wanted and was faster than I needed so I went 60/11 and it crawls great and still goes faster than you can go in the woods/trails.

I run it on a hobbywing sct pro esc (similar to the brushless hobbies esc) which is rated for 120a continuous, so you should be good using your esc. I know that some of the sct guys run this motor with mmp ESCs and those are only rated to 80a continuous.

Edit: I'm running 3s.

Re: need advise, sensorless 550 2-pole 3300kv or sensored 540 4-pole 3300kv

well that sounds good to me.. I also running 3s but LIFE batts 9.9v constant and 10.8 full charge

this is a video of my 1st try with 2.2 panther sand paddles, those tires are really small for the wraith but I got them cuz I saw them in a lot of wraith FOFF rigs, 540 3300kv ripper motor and 9.9v LIFE, for my liking it was in a slow side as you can see
Baja Wriath on panther paddles testing - YouTube

and this is another run with the same electronics but 2.8 sand paws just in the rear
Baja Wraith trailrun baja desert with pro-line 2.8 sand paws - YouTube

this are my normal terrains here, no rocks and no fresh water currents (only salt water) so, no need for crawling rig and no need for waterproof electronics.

Calderwood 06-21-2013 06:40 PM

Imo it will never be what it could be on life packs, atleast not on 3s life packs. If you are anti lipo then maybe solder up some 4s lifes.
