Default Smoking Brushless

So I am replacing my Reedy brushless in my sc18 with a turnigy tracstar 1/18 esc/6100kv motor combo. Hooked to 3s venom lipo. So I hooked up the ESC with old motor and hand everything working ok. Old motor I believe was toast but I was able to setup esc and get to drive around driveway.

So, I then install motor, hook everything up and new motor cogs. turn off the esc switch and poof. Magic smoke everywhere coming from the motor. Pull the battery and let everything cool off. Put the other motor on to see if everything is fine and poof, more magic smoke.

Also, the lipo started getting hot. It didn't puff.

Tells me a massive amount of current was pulled from the battery and dumped into the motor when the ESC was suppose to be off.

Help.

Was the motor smoking too. If it was just the ESC and battery, there's a dead short in the ESC or something plugged in backwards. If the motor smoked along with the other stuff...then you must have somehow angered the RC gods.

The motor was the only thing smoking and smoking a lot. On the first one (new), it melted the wire insulation. On the second, all of the copper wiring is black on the inside.

Oh. Motor is shorted. Probably bad insulation in the windings. If this is the case, it would have put some massive strain on the ESC.

Is that something that happens often on new motors? I am apprihinive of using the esc as it has smoked both my brushless motors (old and new). I don't have any new ones but I do have a couple of brushed 380 size redcat motors. Maybe I will see what happens to them. Brand new esc and motor so I am trying to decide if this is my fault or should I return them to Hobby Town.

I would say, call the manufacturer, or take it to the hobby shop.

sounds to me like the ESC shorted when you shut the switch off, most likely to a motor wire which in turn grounds through the motor. so Bad ESC taking out motors. this is why I never use the power switch and always just disconnect the battery.

I wonder about this. Though, like I said, I drove around driveway without issue, ESC didn't get excesively hot, and then I put on new motor. Somewhere in the whole thing, everything when to shit. I emailed Turnigy to see what they think. Will see.

I like this answer. Sounds right as everything was fine when I connected and disconnected the battery and didn't use switch. I could hook everything up again, plug in battery, ESC will arm, then when I switch off the switch, smokes comes boiling out of the motor (both old and new).

Yea, I don't see Hobby Town doing a whole lot to help me
