Looking at getting a tekin roc 412 or a pro4 but I'm not sure which one would be better all round .

I'll be driving mostly trails and decent crawling. I've heard the roc412 is little slower than pro4 but is a trail motor?

I have a Pro4 3300 in my Axial based rig running on 3s... I love it!
I personally think the speed and power ratio are perfect... I still have great low end control and all the wheel speed I could ever use.

Can't go wrong with either motor. Both are excellent. I run the 3100KV ROC 412 and its a beast. The Pro4 has a 5mm shaft as where the ROC has the 1/8 shaft.

i think you can get the pro4 with the 1/8" shaft nowadays.

i have 4 rigs with the pro4 3300, and i love it. i wouldnt hesitate to get one of the 3100kv roc motors based from my experiences with the pro4.

Does the shaft put limits on my gearing ?

A little, there's slightly more options for the 1/8th shaft. The 5mm pinions only go down to 11t I think... as opposed to a 9t for the 1/8th.

But as Badhoopty said, you can get the Pro4 with the smaller shaft.

ok so back to my original question, which is going to be better for a wraith that is gaining weight and is going to be a basher/trail runner and crawl anything insight with out over heating. Cause currently I'm running a novak 35T terra claw on 2S 20c geared 20/87 and it barely has enough wheel speed to bust loose from a stop, I'm not so sure it is the 2S lipo holding back performance, So I just ordered the Tekin RS with a 3S lipo and am going to hook that up to the Novak 35T and see what happens. The brushless motor will come next week. Got to have some kind of a budgeting going on here.

not the RS GEN2 the older version with the black housing now I see the white cased units have a BIG BEC factory installed and by the specs it would not require an external BEC. If I am wrong please let me know , as I am about to change my order.

After watching some videos I've decided on the roc412 3100 kv.

Will any of the driveline hold up to the brushless power very long? I'm going to try and drive smart and see how long it will last.

Google; strengthening axial wraith driveshafts.

That can't be answered. Kv determines how fast the motors are.

You can get 9th pinions for 5mm shafts. They would require shortening the pinion shaft to get them to line up with the spur on an axial tranny though. 11t would be the smallest pinion that would line up on a full length 5mm pinion shaft.

At a minimum I would epoxy the lockers into the carriers, shim the pinions, and upgrade the driveshafts and trans gears to metal units.

Well toady I'm putting the Tekin RS esc in my rig. I'm going to use the 35T motor I have and some 3s juice. I'll get the brushless when this Novak goes out.

Either motor is a good and overkill choice. I prefer the Pro4 because the low end control is better, some prefer the roc412 because the drag and brake is snappier. It isn't a huge difference though, the average user may not even be able to tell.

That's interesting. I haven't used either but was under the impression from reading Ty's posts that the roc had better low speed resolution. Good tech.

Not the case from my use and measurements. The Roc412 has higher detent ripple, it takes more force to start up. Under load it isn't typically an issue, but when pointing downhill it starts at a higher RPM than the Pro4. Very similar to a 5mm web vs 4mm web brushed armature. The 5mm web has much lower detent ripple and thus starts up much smoother under light load.

Thanks for the info John - it seems I can always learn something new when you talk on motors!

Awesome tech John. I love learning about motors. I couldn't sleep last night and spent hours reading about vintage brushed motors.

Great thanks,John. Today I got the Tekin RS installed using a 35t brushed motor and 3s and the difference is night&day. I can hardly wait till I get a brushless motor.
