Default ANOTHER Novak motor issue thread

So I should have just spent the extra $40 on a roc12 but I bought a ballistic 18.5 crawler motor.

DOES THIS MOTOR SUCK AS BAD AS I FEEL IT DOES?

I'm running 32 pitch with a 12t pinion and a 56t spur.
Trepadors and 3s on a MMP.

This motor with the throttle pinned has no more wheel speed than the same
gearing with a base model HH 35t.

It whistles pops and cogs SOOOO badly.
I feel like its the worst $80 I've ever spent.

Ideas?
Suggestions?

An average 35t is 1565kv and the Novak you bought is 1650kv so the wheel speed should be the same.

^ ok so how come my buddies 17.5 exceleron crawls and sprints like a champ?
I have a speed passion 21.5 that has more wheel speed than the 35t, I wanted more speed with crawler torque and the novak is nowhere close to what it should be.
It's not even drivable!
Waste of $80 so far.

Ok so lets start with the sensor wire. Is it plugged in all the way? Do you have another to try on it? Is the MMP set for a sensored motor? Most people like the sensored only mode.

I wish that motor companies didn't use turn ratings for brushless motors. They don't mean anything solid and are full of marketing nonsense. Kv ratings actually mean something. Your buddies 17.5 is probably well over 2000kv so it should be a good bit faster. I believe your speed passion motor is 2000kv so that should be a good bit faster as well.

I run a 3400kv 4 pole sensored motor in my wrath and it crawls great and goes faster than you can really drive it in the rough stuff.

Btw, anything Novak makes is a waste of money, not just what you bought.

Bought a old ('09) LCC that came with a GTB-2 and a D-3 17.5t in it that ran smoother than my other used ('09) LCC that came with the Excelorin ESC/17.5t Sys. Was also smoother before I swapped the dreaded GTB-2 out for a new MMP! Only thing I did't like about the GTB-2 was its lack of instant reverse.

Just sayin'.

Got a programmer, it's all set on BL sensored only.
Read somewhere that Novak motors can kill castle boards???
If this motor is such a low kv why is it cogging so bad still.
Ill plug in the 21.5 n see if it cogs. Then I should know if my board is fried.

Just wish I had spent the doh on the roc412

When you unplug the sensor wire does it change?

Novak stuff is generally good, but their brushless crawler motors are weak for some reason. My 21.5t crawler motor from them is a lump, does the same as yours, but the ESC and everything else I've ever owned with "Novak" written on it was gold.

No, but I have been using Novak ESCs (among many others) brushed and brushless, both on and offroad, for years without a single issue. My 21.5 Ballistic motor sure is a dog though. It's notchy, slow and generally crappy for a sensored unit.

a simple but commonly overlooked issue is the wiring. make sure the a, b and c are correct from the speedo to motor. You cannot run the a to c or c to a on full sensor mode.

I love my older Novak ESC's, have not had fun with their newer stuff in crawlers.

Hmmm........

-Everytime you recalibrate, all settings go back to default
-Potential issues with using programming cable (could fry the ESC)
-PITA to set-up ESC using "button pushes"
-Never could get a smooth start-up
-Motors tended to be driven different, even swapping motors always had one end pulling harder than the other (tried recalibrating to resolve issue, thus losing all settings yet again)

There is likely more, but I sold it off over a year ago & went with dual ESC's.

PS, the above was on 3S LiPO, 35T motors in a 2.2 comp rig.

This is a buddies wraith with 4WS MMP, Ballistic 13.5 Novak motor, RC4WD 2-speed trans, 14/60 gears (32p), a 1000 mah 15C battery. It also has a level3 lowering kit on it.

Novak motors CAN work...
