Default brushless motor choices?

So I am New to crawlers and electric rc's in general, I just picked up a rock buggy and it has a hobbywing brushless motor and it really seems gutless, what are some good choices for a brushless crawler motor and esc? Something that is affordable or at least somewhat so.

shop around .. get a dynamite fuze 17.5 brushless ($85). Castle sidewider3 ($50) waterproof too and you be set..
17.5 is still good for crawling..
if you want to bounce.. then 13.5 (fast and still crawls)
what ever you decide on.. make sure its Sensored. Need to get a sensor wire too.($5) other wise you ll get cogging issues.(studder)

sidewinder 3 in not sensored

pretty much anything with higher turns or lower KV that is sensored will work fine. right now it seems like the best motor is the Tekin 412 series, but they carry a hefty price of around $145

I love my pro 4 3300. Can be had for $130ish. You can pick up a used mmp for $90ish. So with either the 412 or the Pro 4 and a MMP you'll have 1 of the best set ups available for about $240. Cheaper set up would be a used mmp and a Novak ballistic motor, cost about $150.

Holmes' Revolver S could be a good option. 2000 Kv and lots of power at < $100.

It has a hobbywing ez-run 32t 1200kv brushless system, a 2s Lipo, the battery connector is the same rectangular white plastic one on the nicad batteries I used in my rotostarts for nitro engines.

My losi comp sports a novak brushless ecs motor combo 120 $ , my ax 10 rocks a castle creations programable ecs and an integy55 turn motor 15 $, my ax10 is faster and crawls slower and pulls harderthan the novak setup, you dont always have to spend big to get great results

That motor should have good torque and efficiency but low power for the voltage feed.
Possibly good slow crawling properties, if it's sensored, but low top speed.

3S, or even better 4S LiPo should make that motor able to provide the power required for some speed.
(I'm not sure your ESC can handle it though.)

Tamiya style? Get rid of it! They're known to be inherently unreliable due to oxidation.
Deans, EC3 or XT60 are the connectors of choice.

I don't think if it has been suggested yet but a Tekin RS/Redline motor combo on 3s is a good setup and if your an ebay whore like me you can get a deal if you wait for it. A 13.5 seems to be the speed that is most popular among the members of this forum.

Some have been lucky, but Novak has been known to be garbage. I've smoked more of their esc's than I can remember. A Novak esc isn't a good suggestion or choice. Glad yours hasn't burnt up yet though.

How can I tell if it is sensored?

I doubt I can fit much larger of a battery in my chassis, can I get better results with a different motor on this battery?

What is the best connector ?
Sorry for dumb questions but all the electronic motor stuff is new to me

Idaho theres alot of options as you can see by the post... i say go with a setup that your going to do the most with the crawler... most crawlers are gutless there not meant to be fast just monster torque...

I'm not so much looking to go fast, I guess I could have worded my question better, I'm looking to be able to have some wheel speed when I'm in looser stuff without sacrificing all of my torque.

And I'm still trying to get a grasp on all the terms for electrics, such as motor kv, or turns.

When i think of the term gutless, i think of the lack of power and torque....my friend had a nissan pickup, it was a gutless pos, anytime he tried to climb a hill it bog down and die.

My losi has an insane amount of torque, but goes really slow...i would never consider it gutless.

Back to the question,
I would suggest to go tekin. A Tekin RS (a original or the new Gen2). And either a Sensored Redline motor, a Pro4 motor, or a ROC motor.
imo, the best brushless motors for a crawler right now.

Holmes Hobbies will have some awesomeness here soon, but soon could be a few months or a few years...i've been waiting for a brushless outrunner for over a year now
