Default Question with esc...

I bought the kit rubicon my buddy bought the rtr rubicon... his comes with the axial esc... if i am not mistaken it runs on NIHM but i am not for sure no experince with the axial esc... Makes me wonder he has lipo batterys running through it... does he have to switch it like the HPI esc where you got to program it to what battery your plugging in to or does it matter... Thanks in advice guys for the help
