Question conformal coating vs. acrylic clear

looking for a cheaper alternative. would the clear stand up to water? is there an additive in the conformal coating? seems that the clear would work if you were to make sure the part was completely coated.

I have some old electronics im willing to try this one if no one has tried.

comments, concerns and thoughts welcomed.

Conformal coating is really cheap. One bottle does a bunch of electronics.

TECHSPRAY Conformal Coating, 12 oz - Soldering Accessories - 22HU90|2108-12S - Grainger Industrial Supply

Not exactly cheap, but I would think a 12oz can would last quite a bit.

I had a link for brush on type before, but cant find it now.

Try an electrical supply house in your area

Brush on is WAY easier to use and will come out cleaner. This is what I use: MG Chemicals 419B-55ML Conformal Coating Acrylic lacquer - Liquid - Amazon.com

Hey Sam, how does this stuff hold up to motor cleaner spray? Im thinking of using it on a sensor board in the motor. Have you tried this?

I would imagine the brush would allow you to get into really tight places and under components.

The acrylic, whether aerosol or brush-on can and will flake off. It does not like to be handled after treatment. I highly suggest getting the urethane based stuff. I've done probably 30 pieces of electronics, both mine and other peoples with zero issues. I have some of the acrylic aerosol and I sprayed one rx with it and after letting it cure it flaked of where ever I touched it. I don't suggest getting the silicone based stuff either, though I don't have any experience with it.

Here is what I use:
MG Chemicals 4223 Urethane Conformal Coating: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

The sensor board in the 3656sd in my wraith is coated with this stuff. I don't clean that motor with cleaner though since it's sealed and brushless so there isn't anything to spray.

I have a double board esc that I couldn't get the boards apart on. I sure was glad I had the brush on stuff to get it all in between the boards.

The stuff I use doesn't flake off. It works (and smells) like epoxy. When it's dried you would think that the part is coated in epoxy.
