Default Sevro Winch Choices

Going to set up a sevro winch and not sure what one would make a good choice. How much torque should you use ( usually more is better? ) and what for the speed, faster line draw would be best? It sound like I'm answering my own questions, but what are you guy's using? On a budget or I would find the one with the highest torque and the fastest for line speed.

Already search on the forum but couldn't find the answer I was looking for.

Thanks J.

The more power a servo has the less likely it is to fail. If you're not on a budget the heyok winch and controller combos are really nice. A buddy has one on his 10lb rig and it pulls with no problems. I'll pick one up eventually but for giggles I built one out of an old 645 servo and $1.50 worth of parts from radio shack. So far it pulls my 5lb scx10 around with no problems.

I'm using cheapie towerpro/towardpro servos @7.2v for winches, they easily dead lift both my ~7lb scalers and have decent line speed. Next ones when these die will be some cheapie hv solar servos at 9v.

Get what your budget allows, only step up from a traditional servo winch would be a k3 or quicksand.

both of mine are dead Savox servo's with 360oz @ 6v with Heyok controllers.
Total overkill for a servo winch but much better than leaving them sit in a drawer.

Line speed is kinda tricky.
You want it to move fast when unspooling but slow when winching so you can control it.
I use a Rogue Elements snatch block to slow mine down, as well as double the strength.

I've often thought about doing a radio in a box sorta thing to get a variable speed winch. But in the field would probably be just too much to be practical.

It'd be impossible to run both the truck and winch at the same time, imo, but it'd be really cool to hook the winch up to the throttle of a 2nd radio.

Getting the line spooled out fast was all I was thinking about, never thought about slowing the line down for control .

Will also be using the Heyok controller. I have a couple sevros I'll look up the torque specs. on them.

Thanks J.

I use a HeyOK servo winch and I'm more than pleased with it. My truck weighs around 10-11 pounds and it works like a charm with no issues.

It can be done and works..... Micro esc hooked to servo motor.

Currently running rtr esc's as winch controllers with the 3rd channel of a hacked gt3c, however it's only 3pos and not variable. Been curious about harvesting only the ch1 steering mechanism and elecs. To run a higher voltage for the line speed out and controllability of line speed going in. But like johnnyh66 said, would probably be a bit cumbersome.

are you looking to have the winch controlled via radio? if not there is a pretty cheap way of doing it. heyok () drew up a simple two switch setup for a hoist i put on my rig (see around post 59 in my build thread for reference jebster's 6x6). i just took the internals out of the servo, added the switches and plug in the power. works great for me but it does have to be operated at the truck.

Using hacked gt3b.... Step rate and return to center on d/r. I'll post up my setting if I get a chance this week

Sounds similar to proportional steps in a dual ESC set-up in a hacked GT3B (I have one on dual ESC's, firmware 0.4).

Just mounted up my servo winch using the BPC battery tray in my 10LB Wraith. Servo is a Solar D772 with Heyok controller and GT3C hacked. I did several like 15 dead pulls of 10LB at 11 volts and no heat issues. I think I'll keep it there for now. I have several D772's laying around so no big lose if it burns up.

I used a 645MG. Stripped out all the guts except motor and gears, and used an old brushed ESC to control it. It'll lift my SCX10 vertically no problem, even at the lowest speed.

Good you got it working Donnie. Normal trail winching is nothing compared to dead lift pulls, you're good to go
