| My is Novak 21.5 slow & not that powerful?
So I tried out a Novak Crusher 21.5T BL system cuase it was cheap (paid $110 new) and I haven't tried a BL system. I am dissapointed that my SCX10 now has less "start up" torque and top speed than my Tekin Por 35T. On 3S with my Tekin I could get the tires to turn as slow as a second hand on a clock with it butted up against a wall and I had a top speed of 8mph. With the Novak I can crawl slowly but the Tekin was slower and the top speed was 4mph. Not what I expected. I expected to be less in one area but not both. I am thinking of gearing up just for SnG's and see what happens. I really wanted to give this a shot. I wonder if I should try the 18.5 stator and then consider going to a 12.5mm or 14mm rotor if it lacks smoothnes and torque. I have a 2Spd wraith. I tried a Tekin RS 13.5 redline system that I had laying around and it was almost what I wanted. It lacked torque and brake. To save money and stayed with what I know I ended up going with a HH HW 27T which I am happy with BUT I woder if I am missing out on something else. I don't have a crawler group so I haven't seen what the other systems are like. |

Yes that's a proven winner. I have a new in eth package 18.5 atator. I was curios if anyone thought it would be worthwhile to slap it in. I thought that this BL system would at least equal my brushed setup. I sold one of them to a guy and he said it was the same as his Tekin 35T w more wheel speed. That may be true for him but not for me. I installed the system based on his input otherwise I would of flipped it. I did however suspect that the 21.5 would be slow I just expect more torque or lower start up speed I guess. It will take me two minutes to gear up so I will try that buy I dont want to make a new stator used becuase I needed to try it. If this is hows its going to be I'd rather dump the systems now and go with a sidewinder and a HH HW brushed.

mmp tekin 13.5 on 4s that is what most of the guys in our group run and they perform flawlessly even with 9 64 gearing in 32p

I went from 14/87 (4mph) to 16/87 to 18/87. Speed went up to 6.4mph and torq stayed roughly the same. I still wasn't impressed so I slapped my Tekin FXR and 35T Pro HW and tested it with that set up. I will say this before I continue. Last time I ran the Tekin the motor was puking and I had to clean it, the commutator and the brushes. I put it back and all seemed fine. With that said the Tekin system was the same torq or a lil more but only pulled 5mph. It was geared 14/87. I swear it used to do about 6mph. Maybe the motor is beat up. I dunno.

The 21.5T BL motor performs as could be expected. - It's less smooth at low speed compared to a brushed motor. (Needs more poles to be smooth.) - Less motor speed than a brushed 35T at same voltage. - Less maximum power than a brushed 35T at same voltage. - More torque than a brushed 35T at same voltage, so can use higher gearing. => Increase the voltage to get more speed. Low end behaviour will be poor with that motor no matter what. |

I went to an 18.5. It works bettter for me. Should I go to a larger rotor for more low end/ wsmoothness? I just found out it has the 14mm installed. So looks like my choices are...... 21.5 and gear up 18.5 and maybe gear down buy a Tekin ROC412 - so leaning towards it. Last edited by it8ezbngrn; 11-06-2013 at 09:03 PM. |

For an SCX10 I'd use a brushed motor, unless I wanted it to be a fast basher. If you're stuck on the BL track I'd suggest checking out Holmes Hobbies Revolver S 540. Cheaper, lighter and smoother than the ROC412. |
