Default Noob lipo charging help needed!!!!

I recently bought my son a Rtr rubicon Scx10 for his birthday. I bought him a Duratrax Onyx 150 balancing charger and a 2s 5000 mah Venom hard case lipo battery. I charged the battery up and ran it till the lipo cuttoff kicked in. When I started to recharge it the charger wouldn't charge it and gave me the error code saying that the battery was too out of balance to charge. Called tower hobbies and they where nice enough to replace the charger and battery since they were brand new. Got them out and charged the battery with no problem. Went to recharge the pack and it has done the exact same thing again.
Am I doing something wrong or missing something? Do I need to buy a seperate balancer to use before I charge. That was the reason I bought a balancing charger.
I need to get this fixed. I've got an unhappy 8 yo son wanting to drive his Jeep

My Venom batteries are serving me well. It says battery is out of balance? What's the overall voltage of the pack as checked with a volt meter? Do you have a lipo voltage checker that uses the balance plug? If not you need one.

Also if the battery is 6v or more, set the charger to balance and it should be at 1A for this. Give it a try and post up what it says.

Don't have a voltage checker. I'll get me one ordered. My only options on the charger are 1.5,3.5, and 5.0 amps. Should I try it on 1.5? It says that's for a 750-1500 mah pack.

I have seen a couple stock axial esc set to cut off at 2.6v. If yours hasn't been changed then you may have over discharged the battery. Does your charger have a nimh charging option? Do you have a regular volt meter to check the battery voltage at the plug?

And does the bettery look like its swollen any?

Battery isn't swollen any. I've lost my regular volt meter. I'll get one at work Monday and check it. No nimh option only the three I posted. I haven't fooled with the esc. What do I do if it has over discharged? That may be my problem

You need to buy a castle creations castle link and download the program for the PC. You can set things like the BEC output and lipo cutoff voltages. If your battery is over discharged do not store it anyplace that can catch fire if it decides to self destruct. It's possible it may build itself up enough overnight so the charger will start. If you do get it to take a charge make sure you don't leave it and fix your esc before you run it again.

If you haven't already done so, do some reading on lipos and their care.

Where should I set the cut off at to prevent this in the future?

I run all my stuff at 3.2v. Set the esc to auto lipo as well.

Axial RTR ae2 cntrl/specs

^ good info

I think the ae2 is factory set to auto LiPo cut off (default)
I have a castle link... but choose to leave the cut off on auto.

This way, regardless of whether it's a 2s or 3s LiPo...
the esc will acknowledge/utilize the proper cut off voltage for either.

If I remember correctly,
thought cut off occurs @ 3.3v (per cell) for a 3s LiPo
or maybe it was 3.7v per cell ?
and 3.3v (pc) was the absolute lowest cut off voltage acceptable.
~darn I can't remember now~
Not sure what the 2s cut off is, tho' likely the same volts per cell ?

* pm 6sharky9 ...he's really fond of his 2s LiPo's

IMO... a LiPo battery should be balance charged each and every time it's charged.
My charger has built in balance ports for 2s, 3s, 4s, 6s LiPo's

does your charger have balance charging ports ?
both LiPo power and balance plugs are connected to the charger when the error occurs ?

Ive gotten error beeps sometimes charging my lipo...Ive usually tried a couple a times and it started charging though.

My guess is 3.7v per cell as cut off as 2cells would be 7.4v

haven't used a venom battery but its a lipo none the less

I always balance charge as well as it keeps both cells with the same amount of power.

If you keep having problems with the venom I would give GensAce lipos a shot..been using them 3-4 years now without a single problem.

If you have 5000mah batteries you want to be charging them at 5 amps a 4000 at 4 amps..3000 at 3 and so on

You guys have never seen an ae2 esc come with a 2.6v cut off? So far I've seen 2. One was new out of the box and the other could have been messed with.

I've balanced charged when I charged the battery at 5 amps for the 5000 mah. I think Exocaged may be right and the cuttoff is too low. Going to order a castle link and set it before I run it again. I don't want to kill another battery. I'm going to check my battery with a volt meter tomorrow and try to get it to charge again before I give up on it

If you still have the manual it has a way to do it through the remote and can tell you how to tell what it is set for.

Just thought I would try to charge battery one last time and it worked. It must have built up a little overnight so it would take. I'm definitely going to check the lipo cutt off to try and avoid this again.

Glad to hear it took a charge. Get the LVC up and you shouldn't have this issue again.
