First tekin FX-R install

Hi, just bought a FX-r esc from Tekin. My question are:
Do I need a pogramming wire to use it? To pogram the lipo cut-off etc.?:ror:

Is it smart to plati dip the esc for water proofing? Heat problems?

So hope you guys can help me with this. They doesent sell this in Norway

Everything is handled on the ESC... The manual is included with it, but here's the online version. http://www.teamtekin.com/manuals/FXManual.pdf

As for the rest, someone else can chime in.

I used liquid tape on the outside (everywhere but the led window & buttons) after soldering her up. So far so good in lots of wet but no submarine action.
I got mine used so I cannot be sure if its ready out the gate but those instructions for programming are solid (be ready with a little button pusher & count fast)
I am running 3s with this Capacitor:
4S Heavy Duty Tekin FXR Capacitor

Ok, saw some plasti dip videos on youtube. Shouldnt be that hard :P
I will take a closer look at the pogramming when its intsalled in the car. Why do YOU use capacitor? It`s so many different opinions on either use it or not..
I will just run 2s battery on this ESC so, i dont know :S

I run 3s.
I read many times on here you could use the AE-2 ESC with 3s (stock axial esc that axial says 2s max.)
Smoked 2 trying.
I bought my FXR (pretty hefty purchase for my wallet.) & read it is 2s only (unless you use a different capacitor.)
So for the sake of some safety margin I installed the 4s upgrade capacitor.

Works great, 3s with a 35T brushed. No heat issues (no issues at all so far.)

If you are only going to run 2s the stock capacitor will be plenty & you will still be cool with Tekin if anything does come up.
The liquid tape also can be peeled off if you need to re-solder or make a change.

that is not what I used

The capacitor is for amp spikes that can normally occur. Every ESC has them but they are up under all of that plastic. Go ahead and install it onto the battery posts with the battery leads. Also, wire up a Castle Creations BEC to your Deans battery connector (on the ESC side). This will help with your servo. The FXR doesn't have the best internal BEC in the world and can overheat.

The little lights and buttons on the ESC aggravated the stew out of me when I first got the FXR and was trying to set it up. After destroying two lipos while trying to test the LVC, I went ahead and bought the $45 Hotwire kit and it has been smooth sailing from then on!

Plasti dip dried funny for me leaving bubbles & gaps needing lots of coats.

The liquid tape bushed on & dried as it was wet (no shrinking or bubbling) & is more elastic than the plasti dip.

Indeed.

Drawing power for your servo through the internal BEC is not a good idea if you have a 200oz + servo.

Everyone here seems to like the external BEC (voltage regulator) to power your servo.
They work great but, if they burn out it can spike your voltage to whatever your battery is putting out (3s 11+ volts for me) which then burns your servo fast.
I nearly toasted one of the most expensive components on my crawler(my servo)when my bec went out (luckily on the bench & I could pull the battery fast.)

I run a 2s Life battery pack for the servo only (6.6 v max.)
It is heavier & more of a pain in the a$$ but there is no chance of the BEC going out & frying my servo.

I will look into the capacitor and the castle creation BEC. Sucks to burn the esc or battery.

And yes, hotwire seems smart.. Just a shame that the shipping to Norway cost more than the hotwire itself :(

Capacitor ordered.... check
Hotwire ordered..... check

Trying to find a CC BEC here in Norway.. If not, ebay :D

EDIT: BEC ordered :P

We love pictures around here.
When you get your stuff, take some pics of the install & your rig & join the "heres my truck" crowd.

I`ve solderd most of it tonight. But i forgot the capacitator.
Can i mount it on the battery wires? That is the best solution for me now :P I`ve drawn a arrow on the picture!

Remote mounting caps has worked for my fxr and rs pro, makes it easier to solder and mount in hidden places. If you do this, be sure to heat shrink the cap as it can short the + & - of the battery terminals if it touches. Don't ask how I figured that one out

ahh, I see. I`ve solderd up most of it. Just forgot the capacitator :P

Haha, did you short it out?

Re: First tekin FX-R install

So, I got it installed and it worked great.... for 1 battery. Then the car was going faster backwards than forwards. I thought it was the endbell or something. but everything seems okay (wiring, battery, esc and motor). My Tekin is blinking 3 leds when I start it up and it takes a second before it will do something. (not the normal startup).
Im waiting for my hotwire and I think it is a little hard to set the esc up.
So I hope for some tricks of what this could be! Thanks!

Re: First tekin FX-R install

when you did your calibration, did the lights blink to the right-hand side when setting forward, and to the left for reverse. I had to reverse it in the radio, then reverse the wires on the motor to get everything right.

not sure about the leds on startup. never paid any attention to mine.

issue i have is whether my bec was installed or not, my power switch does nothing.

Tekin lists the FX-R as 3s capable with 35T or higher motors

Re: First tekin FX-R install

I have tried to calibrate it. But I have to revers it before taking it in forward. I`ve set my controller on revers settings and I have soldered the wires from the ESC to the motor yet, because I wanted to test if it was right hooked up.
And it`s weird that it worked one battery before my problems....?
