Default Axial AS-3 compared to AS-4 servo

Guess you could say this is a write up.

This started out as finding an inexpensive servo for my rear steer on my Wraith. I was able to find the stock AS-4 from the Exo thinking it was an upgrade of the AS-3.

I was wrong. The AS-3 is a metal gear servo, the AS-4 is plastic. I got about 4 runs on it and i started loosing my rear steer and could hear a clicking sound. I decided to take it about and see what was wrong and found out the smaller plastic teeth broke.

Then after i took the AS-4 apart i wanted to check my AS-3 that I've been using for 3 years now and have abused it. Found out there's a huge difference. Here's what i found. According to Axial's FAQ page the AS-3 has 120oz of torque at 6 volts, wasn't able to find the specs for the AS-4. I would highly recommend the AS-3 over the AS-4. I don't even know why Axial wasted the time and money on the AS-4. Such a great company with a POS part is a shame. Here's a few pictures of the guts.

here's with the back cover removed.

now to the gears. AS-4 on top, AS-3 on bottom

here's the front cover. The AS-4 is all plastic. the AS-3 is a plastic case with a bronze bearing on the middle gears and a plastic on the horn shaft.

as-4 is a faster servo with far less torque specifically designed for the fast moving light front wheel duty of the exo. No need for heavy duty servos when you're going fast - it actually helps the servo perform.

Plenty of "go fast" servos are made with plastic and hold up just fine. Its when you put too much weight on the plastic that the gears take a dump.

Well to be fair the AS-4 is just as $#!tty in the exo. Mine lasted almost 2 packs so maybe 30-45 minutes.
