Ok so I reread the whole post and John says in post 442 the hv400 uses savox gears and unfortunately savox will not sell to him anymore. Sorry for the bad lead.

Correct. Im not sure what gearset it is in savox brand, but a savox compatible (same OEM manufacturer) gearset was used on the hv400.

For folks who had precious little runtime before a hv400 failure, we are trading out hv500s to keep them running. May be out of warranty, but I understand that sometimes we buy stuff that sits on the shelf for a year or two before use. Truth be told, im still five figures in the red on servos as a whole. But that doesn't change our commitment to customers.

If you got your gearset recently, same time as SHV500 shipment came in, it has the properly hardened middle pin. If the gearset was from a month ago, it has a chance of having overhardened pins. We still aren't above a 5% break rate, to put some perspective on the overall issue.

The SHV500 has the properly hardened pins, and so does all HV500 inventory currently on my site. Any "old order" inventory was taken apart and rebuilt.

Greetings,

Thanks for the help guys!

This servo was a replacement after going through 3 gearsets. It lasted the longest. It probably has 20 hrs on it. I wouldn't call it minimal use. Last time the truck was out was February. On a side note, it wasn't the usual bell looking gear I believe it lasted longer as I only ran it at 6 volts.

Thanks,
John

What servo horn does everyone like to run? Yesterday I noticed the locknut on the backside of my racers edge horn is contacting the servo case on my scx10. I put this horn on because the axial horn that was on the scx went to my bomber build...

Try threading the screw from the other direction. Use the lock nut to secure the link to the screw on the bottom side of the servo horn. That way, the only thing between the servo horn and the servo case is the button head of the screw, which should clear without any problems. Also, it's a good idea to keep thin locknuts on hand for places where you don't have a lot of clearance.

Can we do the diode drop thing to run the SHV500 off of 4S, or won't diodes pass the current? What do these things draw anyway?

I have the HV500 on my bomber and it's just awesome. I have been replacing all my servos to HH brand servos. The idea you can message Holmes and he actually helps you is worth the money.

It is possible to use a zener diode as a simple voltage regulator. Probably would be better off using a BEC.

I bought my HV5000 servo from Supershafty. How do I tell they have the upgraded pins?

run your rig into something or roll it down a hill . The pins that are overhardened are quick to pop.

I won't be recommending any sort of modding for 4s running. I am working on the components needed to make future manufacturing tolerant of 4s. ff

So we can proactively order the upgraded pins? Will a paypal invoice from the vendor be good enough for proof of purchase?

I'm emailing him again.
Nothing showed in my mailbox.

(Edit: within two hours of emailing again, I have a tracking number from Justin.)

Perfect. I need to decide if I should wait -- we talking weeks, months or years?

3 to 6 months. I actually did all the work for 4s use two months back, just waiting on samples.

I have a hv500 from the end of batch 1 ish? HH ran out of their first batch but supershafty had a few left so I grabbed it from them. Could this servo have a issue with the over hardened pin? Thanks.
