| Cheapest 24v 1000w power supply?
I'm upgrading to a 1000w charger and need a power supply. What's the cheapest way to do this? Modded used server power supplies are $80 plus shipping on eBay for a 24v 1000w unit. If I buy two server power supplies and mod them myself is there anything I need to look for or can any two 12v 1000w units be wired in series? 12v 1000w units are $20 shipped so it would be less than half the cost to diy. The way I understand it, I just need to isolate one unit from ground and then I can wire them in series. There doesn't seem to be any special requirement regarding what power supply I start with. Is this correct? Last edited by Calderwood; 04-12-2014 at 08:22 PM. |

I'm really surprised I'm not getting any feedback. I guess I'll go ahead and buy a pair of 12v 1000w power supplies and mod them and run them in series. I'll update this thread when I get them. Edit: I just ordered a pair of 12v 1200w power supplies so we will see how this goes... Last edited by Calderwood; 04-13-2014 at 09:22 AM. |

From what I have read, switching power suplies do not like to be connected together. I don't understand that you couldn't find a 24V PSU on ebay? You do realize that a GOOD 1000W 12V PSU is around 150$ each? Edit : I have seen 24V/1000W for around 250$ which is a real market price. Last edited by SilmarilS; 04-13-2014 at 10:45 AM. |

I dunno if you are really gonna find a lot of people on here using a power supply that big. Plane guys sure, but few car systems use chargers that require power supplies that big. Charlie would probably be the best person to ask, as he works in that type of field....along with being in RC since they had rubber bands for motors. Rcgroups forums would be where I looked for an answer.....or maybe the ebike guys. Though, a power supply that big......Cheap would be the last term I would be looking at. Later EddieO |

Here is the write ups that I used to convert a couple of HP server power supplies into a 24V supply to power my Hyperion HP-EOS1420i. Convert HP server power supply for RC use - TJinTech 2x HP server PS for 24V - TJinTech I used a pair of DL380 G4 Power supplies that I bought off of eBay for $30 including shipping. It takes about an hour to do the conversion. Not hard to do but you do need to pay attention to the part about separating the AC ground from DC ground on one of the power supplies. Let me know if you have any questions about the conversion. |

Good lord! You could charge a battery in 30 seconds, or power a bison sized deep frier with this.

Incase anyone else wants to do their own with the same power supply I'm using, here is a link with the instructions for getting them to turn on and for disconnecting the 12v side on the second supply from ground so that they can be safely wired in series. Calderwood- this is my setup. 24V 47A 1150W The pair cost me $110 with power cords. I didn't want to try modding myself, so I bought them done. |
