Default Different rotors same can

So I did some reading on the interwebs. Mostly on rctech.
I'm curious to know what limitations there are as regards swapping rotors out in brush less sensored motor's.
Perhaps someone can enlighten me.
If the rotor physically fits, are there other limitations?

Not that I need to, but what happens if I stick a 1/8 scale rotor in an 540 can?
Assuming it fits.

Can you swap 2 pole for 4 pole? 1 thread says no, due to windings?
Explain if you can.

I've got loads of questions, but I'll wait.

Rotors are changed to switch horsepower and torque. They have inverse relationship when the turn count is not changed. Rotors are measured by widths of their magnets.

Trying to think of the physics in my head, but switching a 2 pole rotor with a 4 pole won't work in my head if you only have a 3 slot stator. I don't think it will work, but maybe if you mess with the sensor software
