And, sorry to hijack but I recommended this wiring setup to a friend with a servo capable of running 8.4v the only difference was instead of a separate battery he ran the red/black to the main battery. As soon as he turned the truck on, the servo went full left and smoked before he could unplug it. Now I'm kinda leery of running a setup like this myself. Thoughts?
He wired something wrong, or the servo was bad to begin with. The servo has no idea when it's 3 wires are going. Power and ground can come from the RX, a BEC, a receiver pack, the main battery, the moon, etc. The signal has to come from the RX.

Power and ground to power and ground, signal to the RX. Done.

7.4 to be safe. According to John, the S420 will fail catastrophically at about 9.2v. You could go up to 8.0 on your BEC but your safety window for BEC power spikes shrinks accordingly.

If your friend had a 2s receiver pack and wired it correctly, everything should have been fine. What type of servo was it? I've smoked Hitecs twice at initial power-up which were previously working fine. Same symptom too - hard turn to one side and magic smoke.

This is how I'm re-wiring my Wromber. I had John take a look and he gave it his approval. The main point is to isolate the inductive loads (motors, lights, winches) from the receiver and servo(s).

EDIT - I had to add a ground from the Rx to the ESC, it would not arm without it.

Was he on 2S or 3S LiPo? Fully charged?

I had no idea John @ ProModeler was here in FL let alone in Orlando. I'm in palm beach, but will be in Orlando at the end of the month. Is there a physical location I can pick up a servo or is it only available on the website?

The rain is just now starting to pick up. Hopefully I'll still have power for a long while

is there any servo fade after longer hard run time or centering issues?

cool, i think whats got me interested in it other than the bang for buck, is that the construction of the servo. The case and gears look extremely durable.

Ordered one of these this am. We'll see if it lives up to its supposed rep or not pretty soon.

I might have to pick one of these up. I bought a RC Gear Shop DHV300 Ultra Torque Digital Servo for my Bomber build and it's sloppy as hell. I don't know if it came like that or if it couldn't withstand the 4 batteries of use.

You must have a pretty big servo graveyard at this point

I slapped mine on the SCX10 last night. The truck won't be running for a bit but I think this servo has the best appearance I've seen that the pictures don't do it justice. I wear my head lamp when wrenching and I can't even look at the thing because it just blinds me until I look away.

Jato - did you add a aluminum servo mount to your Bomber?

The Vanquish one from RPP Hobbies is cheap and does wonders, because the stock plastic will flex under strain, especially with more than double the wimpy Tactic servo's torque rating...

Vanquish Products AR60 Axle Servo Mount Black Anodized

I have not picked up an aluminum mount yet, but it's on my list.

The servo output shaft itself rocks back and forth a bunch. I should contact Tower and see if they'll stand good for it.

Bec is already at 7.4 and the servo is rated for 8.4 exactly as bluebird.
