| DX3 toggle switch installation
Here is a mod for you guys with a DX3 set up for 4WS but don't like having to hold the A switch to steer the rear wheels. This will show you how to install atoggle switch in parallel with the A switch and have rear steering like the TQ3 mod. Thanks to Digger for pointing me in the right direction to be able to get this mod done. Here is my original thread inquiring about setting up a DX3 for 4WS. DX3 with 3 position switch? |

First you'll need a 3 position toggle switch like this one. I already soldered the wires onto it last night. |

First remove the 8 screws from the pack and unplug the anntenae from the pcb. The anntenae is the little gold plug with the grey wirte attached. Unscrew the pcb that backs switches A and B to get more room to work and drill a pilot hole to mount the toggle switch. Insert toggle switch into pilot hole, I had tro bend the tabs over to get clearance on the backside of the pcb. Solder the 3 wires to the back of the pcb in the locations shown. Reinstall anntenae plug and back of case. Now you don't have to hold switch A on one side or the other for rear steering. Last thing is you need to put the 3rd channel in 3P mode. Press and hold mode and channel button at the same time and then turn on power to acces system. Then press mode button twice this puts you in menu for fn3 button hit the increase or decrease to select which mode u want ( you want this in the 3P mode instead of LN). Power off and you're set Last edited by rkrawler; 11-25-2009 at 03:44 PM. |

With it set up like that does the steering center itself after releasing the switch? Or do you have to manually center the wheels yourself after your turn.

When the switch is in the center position the wheels are centered. When the switch is trown one way or the other the wheels turn in one direction or the other. You can still use switch A to do the same thing but with switch you have to hold the switch in position with your thumb as opposed to flipping the toggle switch one way or the other.

Actually this will only work as described in the DX3 and XR3 radios, not the newer models such as the XR3i or DX3.0 because they don't have the 3 position switch setting in the software anymore. Also you have to make sure the switch is in the center/off position to change model memory or radio settings. Not only does this work for rear steer without having to hold the switch, but this exact switch install would be perfect for shifting a Tamiya 3 speed tranny. I think you can also get a momentary version of this center-off toggle switch which would center itself when you let it go. This would work the same as the stock third channel switch A, but you could put it where ever you wanted to be comfy for you and the toggle lever would be easier to control than the tiny switch A is...

It's just to the right of the blue wire. It sneaks up from underneath the board. I initially couldn't find it either. The three solder points are right next to each other. |

Just wanted to confirm im not crazy about soldering my 100 dollar radio without being sure that im doing it right. Is this correct? Also is there anything else to watch out for or I might run into that someone who has already done this has noticed? |

Nice write up. That silly little "A" switch has caused me more than one problem. I'll be doing this to mine for sure. |

I have this done on my XR3 and it works great.Digger mentioned using it for rear steer,or shifting a 3-speed.It also works great for front dig (4WD,freewheel,brake).

Glad you guys found this post useful. I was hoping to "give back" to the community. Once I did mine I was really happy with the results. |
