Trouble diagnosing steering problem

I'm new to RC, so even as I write this question I realize it may be obvious. But I'm asking anyways because the conclusion I came to in diagnosing the problem seems so improbable that I'm wondering if I'm missing something.

Here's the situation, we have a Redcat Everest 10 and the steering stopped responding - no sound, nothing. The drive works fine. I recharged all batteries, but the steering still didn't work. Now we have another Everest 10, so I thought I would use that to diagnose whether it was the servo or something else. So I connected the servo from the non-working truck to the receiver on the truck that was working, powered on, but the servo did not respond, so I thought the servo must be bad. However, I also connected the steering servo from the truck that was working to the receiver on the bad truck, and then that servo would not respond.

So my conclusion was that both the receiver and the servo were bad. But it just seemed so improbable that both went bad at the same time that I'm wondering if there's something I'm missing.

Any ideas?
