Default 3 steering servo choices. Give a guy a hand?

Out of these 3, which would you recommend? This is going in my 1/9 Suburban trail truck, not going to try any hardcore crawling or anything.

They are have fairly similar specs, but some have a bit more torque and some have more speed etc... But they are all in my desired ~$20 price range!

Solar D772

The Solar is tested and proven by many of us. Just use a BEC and it puts out a lot of power for its price.

Its strong for a low end servo but those numbers are extremely optimistic. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual torque is 100 oz less (300+ oz on 7.4V from a $20 servo is still very good though).

For the OP: the Solar needs a 23T servo horn (a clamping version makes installation much easier). I don't believe that is listed in the specs anywhere.

...that servo horn will work.

But it would be better if it utilized two screws
and was a double clamping horn like the Axial ones.

ie: https://www.amazon.com/Axial-AX30834.../dp/B0076MT2SG

^ a little more coin...
but could be obtained at a lower cost elsewhere.

And there are lower cost chinese knockoffs to be had
if wanting it even cheaper.

I have a pile of HK15298B & have only had one fail from me not sealing it up at the nose properly.
I also have a few Power HD LW-20MG

Both have worked well, but not linkage snapping power.

May try this some day...

Did a quick search for some verification and found this from 2013:

Solar Servo from Hobby Partz? 400 oz for $23.

If it slips, just glue it on, duct tape it and put a hose clamp on it...

Well shit. I'll check again when I get home but I think that's right since I remember there being a horn debacle going on.

My $0.02 on cheap servo horns. Stripped the splines on many a cheap non-clamping servo horn being used on cheap servos. I would believe the aluminum quality on those horns could be anywhere on the aluminum alloy scale and the size tolerance of the spline on the servos themselves seem to vary enough that one is tight and the next is loose, same manufacturer, same model. Still using cheap servos but switched to Axial horns. Top quality, top price, and haven't stripped one since I switched.

I've had quite a few Solar D772's
both 1st production and a later production.

Decent low buck high torque/voltage servo...
but probably under powered for heavier rigs sporting
near 6" tires.

'course I now run a servo having 500 oz in in my SCX-10
and nearly 700 oz in in my 1:6 scale crawler.

The D772's worked purdy good on my SCX-10 sporting 4.60" tires tho'

I had problems with the later production D772's
as the output would become disengaged and just spin.
So tho' the motor's ran... the engagement failed to steer.

Rather then hassle with returns...
I just ate it and called it an experience.
And now utilize more expensive/high end servos.

In the later production Hobby Partz cheapened up the gears
and IMO were not as quality as the 1st production run.

I have 4 that the motors have burn't up...
mostly my fault due to a faulty BEC / voltage setting.

Then on one... the motor runs... but doesn't engage the output shaft.
So I'll assume that one is from the 2nd production of 3 I purchased rnd II.

Then on the final one (with the servo horn)... it runs fine...
and was from the 2nd production batch.
and I swapped out to the older gears instead of using the newly designed gears.
Seems to be operating just fine.

I also have two Axial 23 spline alloy double clamping servo horns.
That I will no longer be using.
One will be offered individually...
The other will come with the working D772

Was going to list all of these for sale...
But thought I'd mention them here before doing that.

The one D772 with the servo horn attached is the good one.
and was hardly used before being swapped.
It was the newer production servo...
But I installed the 1st production gear set.

All of these have good gears in them...
some just have a dead motor or the output shaft slips...
3 were from the later production and had output slippage.

But the extra servos would be good for parts and gear replacements.

If the OP or anyone is interested in obtaining any of these...
or want them all.

PM me for further discussion.
as I plan to let them go for cheap.

albiet... the 23T Axial alloy clamping servo horns will not come free.

gear comparison of 1st production to later production...

Was changed to make them less expensive in cost is my guess.

...1st prod. gear upper

...1st prod. gear lower

...1st prod gear upper

Easy to see the 1st production gears had more machining done to them.
And their cost was likely higher to produce.

The steering slippage occurs on the gears placed individually on the towel.
The primary gear and smaller gear are just compressed together...
And if they're loose... the steering fails.

The 1st prod. gears never slipped.
only the revamped gears.

Hopefully Hobby Partz has corrected the fault of their revamped production.
It's been awhile so I'll assume they have.

Purdy good servo otherwise... for the price anyways.

Let me know if there's any interest before I post these in the classifieds.

Welp I don't think Hobby Partz sells replacement gears for the D772

So you may think about picking up one of my duds as back up.
just in case you strip the gears.

But I'll post these up in the FS classifieds
in case others might have an interest.

Good luck with your new purchase.
