Castle sensored setup for Bomber? Hey guys. I'm thinking about a sensored Castle Creations Mamba Monster X + motor combo for my Bomber. Do you think the 2200kv or 2650kv would work better? I'll be using 3S and my rig will be for bashing/rock racing. And can someone explain to me what the number on different CC motors mean? Eg: 1512, 1515, 14XX... etc.... I'm running a HH PP 3500 standard right now with a 12T pinion and while the speed is good, the motor gets a bit too hot for my liking so I'm hoping a lower kv and larger can size will help. |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? How hot is the PP getting? |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? Do you have a temp gauge to check the motor? 140-150*F is what I try to stay at or below. I run the PP3500 in the Bomber on 3s and 12T pinion and she's 115* after a run. |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? Your motor should not be getting hot. Something else is going on. 1. Check for binding in the drivetrain. 2. How much does your Bomber weigh? |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? The numbers are the size of the stator inside the can. 1406 is 1.4" x 0.6". 1512 is 1.5" by 1.2". First number is the diameter, second is the length. |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? It weighs about 8.5-9 pounds. I don't have a temp gun to measure the exact temperature, but I can't keep my finger on it for more than 5 seconds which in my experience is hotter than it should be. There is definitely no binding in the drive train either. Bear in mind that I use my rig for bashing and rock racing high speed time stuff, not crawling. I've seen guys here use the PP XL in their Bombers, and I assume there must be a reason why they're doing that. |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? Get a temp gauge. Worth it vs a new motor. |

Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? Yep gear mesh is fine. Is it possible just the way I run it, the motor can size is just too small to dissipate all the heat? Especially since it's a non-ventilated can. I guess I could reduce the pinion size a little more but I don't want to sacrifice any of the speed I currently have. Maybe the HH PP XL with the higher 3500 kv is more suitable than the CC setups? |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? I run a puller pro xl 3500 with a 12t pinion and the motor barely gets warm after a 4100mah pack. Seems to have plenty of ass if I wanted to gear up also. Do you have a metal motor mount or are you still using the stock plastic? |

Castle sensored setup for Bomber? You really need to get a temp gun and get accurate readings of your temps. I bet you're not really that hot. Since you say you're mostly running wide open try going up a tooth. Undergearing cause just as much heat as overgearing. I run an XL with a 16t pinion and it runs about 160 on a hot day. Perfectly acceptable and very difficult to leave my finger on it for 5 seconds. |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? From what I was told Castle motors will run all day at 160. Maybe Robt from Castle can help here ? Hang up and Drive |
Castle sensored setup for Bomber? All motors run all day at 160. I think Castle even says up to 200. |

Yes, you need a temp gun if you are into RC. They are so cheap that you have no reason not to buy one. The "thumb test" will give you an idea, but finger sensitivity varies greatly so it's not an accurate test. |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? If you can hold your finger for at least 5 seconds, your motor temps are totally fine. Get a temp gun and I bet you'll be surprised at what it shows. |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? I just looked it up. Castle states never to exceed 180. Pretty sure in the old days they said 200 but I haven't used Castle motors for years. |
Re: Castle sensored setup for Bomber? I actually do own a temp gun (at least I think I still do), but I was hoping to not have to dig it out. I have a feeling you guys are right and that my actual temp is nowhere near 160. Rjohn also raised an interesting point about under-gearing also producing heat. I'm definitely gonna look into that too. |

The Holmes Puller Pro 3500kV is a great motor. It should work fine in your Bomber as it does in mine and a lot of others. You don't need another motor unless it's defective. I would not suggest a Castle motor and definitely not something as low as 2200kV or 2650kV. |
