| Esc for a winch controller
I'm being super cheap and want to use my old axial AE-1 for my servo winch controller. Going to pull all electronics out of servo so it's just the motor. I know how to make a servo winch, just don't want to deal with drift, an on/off switch on the truck to prevent drift like I've done before and don't want to pay for a winch controller. So, this should work just fine with my spektrum dx4c. I'll just use the white wire from AE-1 connected to my receiver and one of my spare channels to control in and out. And battery power into ae1 and power out to winch motor. Anything I'm missing? Thanks! Ben |

I never thought of that before. I think that will work nice. I already have some spare parts, so I will try it, must work way faster and stronger than with the factory controller.

Use the servo plug ground wire along with the white signal wire, sometimes spektrums have been known to be fussy about that, if the ae-1 will be connected to its own battery instead of the main battery in the rig then definitely make sure the black ground wire is used. Tony |

Yeah I forgot to mention I tie all grounds in together. It'll be powered from my BEC power distribution block. I'd like to run it at straight 3s power but the ae1 isn't rated for that much power from what I've read. Thanks Ben |

Yup, this is how I power my winches, it works a lot better and provides a lot more control than just plain three-position controller. Here is what I did on my C1 build. The first part of the video is on a motor swap for the winch, then it gets into the ESC part of it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUu0i-HsTWM&t=357s |

If your radio is capable of steps or increments you can set it up so you have fast-slow-medium line speeds also.
If your radio is capable of steps or increments you can set it up so you have fast-slow-medium line speeds also.[/QUOTE Hey Kev, thanks for the info. I have a hack GT3C, so should be easy for me to program into it also. I'm sure this is something you have done more than once! Ernie |

Yep i use this method. Works best if the esc has an instant fwd rev mode without the brake. I found a $15 1/18 size esc with instant fwd rev and supports 3s. Can be made even smaller if you remove the casing and heatsink. Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |

This one. There are 2 switches. 1 for switching between lipo and nimh and the other to set the mode. Fwd/brk, fwd/brk/rev or fwd/rev. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/132097934957 Sent from my SM-G930F using Tapatalk |

Yep, works great. I also program a second button to perform full speed, that way I can reel in and out with out multiple clicks. I also like to put the multiple speed switch on momentary, makes it easy for finite control. Depending on esc, you will also have drag brake on the winch line. Useful in holding position on a grade if you need to stop winching for any reason.
Quote:

Post Revival! Thanks HonchoJoe for the specific esc you found. My son has burnt up three expensive controllers in the past year or so, and I needed a cheaper alternative. I soldered this esc up tonight and it works perfectly using the momentary switch on the aux. Much better than a two or three position switch. Fingers crossed!
