Default Non Gearing Technical Q's About Brushed Motors & Overheating

During my time around all different kinds of RC's i've seen some brushed motors dying for various reasons.

The thing that confused me a little though is i've seen 2 brushed motors dying from overheating that didn't get hot enough to produce smoke and i've seen 2 other brushed motors that got hot enough to smoke, but still kept working.

The 2 motors that didn't smoke got really hot (no temp gun with me sadly) but no smoke and not really any burning smells. They were stopped running because the motor temp was noticed by finger. They were running before switched off, no smoke and no visible reduced performance. WHen cooled down and switched back on, no power to the motor at all. Even if you connect a battery straight to it.
One of these was a Stampede, (Stinger 20t 540)
Another on a Brama 10b buggy (Clash 21t 540)

The other 2 motors that smoked were a little different.
Horrible burning smells from both and visible smoke.

RC4WD motor, few runs on it, 35t. Smoked twice on same day breifly. Allowed to cool and drove more or less same as before. - Overgeared SCX10

The other SCX10 that also smoked it's motor around the same time on the same day as the one above also (also overgeared) only smoked it once, and it was a brand new 550 sized 35t motor. After it was allowed to cool down it ran but had massive power loss.

What is it that makes different brushed motors handle abuse / heat differently?
Where is the smoke coming from, specifically?

I'm guessing the smoke is from the coating over the windings, and the different types of magnets used in different motors tolerate heat differently?

Don't worry, i don't smoke my motors, just curious

^ failure of that coating due to high temp cycles.
