Axial AE-3 ESC compatibility with brushed

Looking to put a brushed motor in my rig currently running a ae-3 esc. I've had enough of the brushless 3150kv. My gf runs the scx10 with the 27t brushed motor and ae-5 id like to be in that sort of range. Also super new to axial and brushed motors. Used to traxxas style brushless. Thanks!!

Google is amazing.

Braap better refer to a rotary engine!

Ive looked at that already. But others have said things like you will only get half the power that you should, that it cant etc. More or less wondering if the say 27t is a good match for this esc. Thanks!

HH's Torque Master Expt. 27t - 35t (540 motor)

^ $ 45 - 50. (ish) investment.

newest release...

previous release...

http://cdn.rcmart.com/images/holmes-...8-01%20(1).jpg

27t - 30t if running 2s

30t - 35t if running 3s

I'd suggest selecting 0* timing so forward and reverse net the same rpm/torque.

My 540 35t runs on 3s - 6s voltage most always and has held up great. *
I run this set up in both my 1/10 and 1/6 scale rigs.

* remember if running 3s or higher voltage.
The rig needs be geared down lower then would 2s.

ie: volt up = gear down... to obtain a cooler running motor.
Excessive motor heat is bad for e motors/brush wear.
So something to avoid.

HH's also offers a larger 550 sized motor as well if more torque is wanted.
albeit... some mounting modifications may be required for fitment.
The 540 sized mtr can will fit without altercation.

btw: budget motors do not compare.

The HH's BR/XL ESC is similar to the ae3 (tho' brush use only)
but it is 6s capable and better performing in most every way.
JR Homes reprograms them in house and increases their voltage input.
^ IMO one of the best brush only ESC's available.

Majority of HH's offered e components are Castle - USB link compatible.

Holmes Hobbies

^ you can't go wrong using HH's quality built e components/mtrs...
and they offer great customer service and advice if you inquire with them.

I utilize the HH's RX by-pass "Y" adapter supplying the servo voltage directly.
And use the BR/XL's internal BEC to supply the RX.
An external CC's BEC is used to supply the voltage off the primary battery directly to the servo.

^ This is a very reliable method of wiring the e components and I'd recommend it.
Should work just as well using your ae3.

My wiring set up looks like this...

Re: Axial AE-3 ESC compatibility with brushed

Apparently it only uses half the FETs brushed (from what I read). I believe it's only about a 60A ESC from memory so it might be a bit lightweight with half the FETs in use.

The Hobbywing 1080 WP ESC is $41 and excellent. The Traxxas 21T 550 whilst not in any way fancy is probably $20 and works a treat for trail usage. I have on in a Bomber and SCX10 and for $60 plus a $15 3S lipo it's a killer setup.

It's the equivalent of a 540 can 28T. Just gear down a bit for hardcore crawling to keep everything cool but it's perfect for mixed trail usage. I geared the SCX10 to 80/26 and it goes like a scalded cat. Runs virtually cold for crawling in cooler weather.

Wow, Super high gear setups. These high gear setup should be no problem in cooler weather. "thumbsup"

I have few friends run brushed motors on AE3 with no problem as they geared so low. :)

Re: Axial AE-3 ESC compatibility with brushed

Yeah they are more trail trucks than dedicated crawlers but the speed is enjoyable and not in any way silly; they are probably right on the cusp of what is reasonable for the two trucks. We're into crawling mixed with zooming around and rock bouncing type stuff but they do crawl really well.

That SCX10 48P gearing virtually matched exactly the Bomber with stock 12/64 32P gearing with the same motors. The Bomber gets a tad warmer than the SCX10 probably due to the extra weight but they are both totally happy being mercilessly thrashed around (it's just crawling that makes things warm up).
