| Brushed Motors on 4S & 6S
Hi guys, Im still quite new to this so exploring different things. Today I thought I would try powering up some of my brushed motors with 4S and 6S. I have a mamba X in my bomber, it currently has a Titan 21T in there temporarily. I had a little play with 4S and it seemed nice and lively, not as quick as the 3800KV I took out but pretty good. I then tried it on 6S, loads of grunt, not far off the 3800 which was impressive. Though after a couple of mins it was rather toasty and smelt a little, so I suspect 6S might be too much. So then just tried connecting some motors loose and spinning them up. First was an old HPI 55T....it took 6S nicely ( hanging loose in my hand) and spun at quite a rate. I then tried the same with an Axial 27T, that really howled on 6S. I may try the 55T actually in the bomber at some point as its quite tired now and I think this could finish it off in style.... What would be good if the HW1080 could run on 4S as I think that would be rather epic in my SCX10.2....I just havent quite grown the balls to plug in a 4S and see if it smokes it or not.... |

Well, not the greatest idea but a motor's ability to not fail on high voltage is somewhat related to how fast it can rotate. Enjoy it while you can. One of the better set ups I have is a Holmes Hobbies Cobalt Puller and 6S. The motor is a 14 turn 5 slot 550. Would have been great in the Losi Comp Crawler if it weren't a brick of a battery and beer can of a motor. |

Wow they look impressive motors, but they arent exactly cheap. The 55T and 35T are around £10 so if it dies its not the end of the world. Yes its pretty much like with a real life engine...its revs that kill them ! Unless its a rotary and the apex seals ( RX7) go or the coils pack in and the unburnt fuel washes the oil off the apex seals...killing them( RX8 ). |

Much like a brushless motor, the higher turns should tolerate voltage better. It comes down to how good their winding process was, the wire coating, comm & brushes, etc. The titans were designed with higher voltage in mind, not so much the smaller can motors. Just be aware the extra arcing & rpm will wear the comm & brushes much faster. One nice thing about the 1080 is it uses an efficient switch-mode BEC. Without it the BEC would dump a LOT of heat into the ESC heatsink. |

Ive had a few cans now and Im still not brave enough to try plugging in 4S on the 1080... Im loathe to break it in my SCX as its working so well. I do have 2 sat here ready for xmas day, but they are for me and my Son and our GOM builds... Its such a good ESC, though lately Ive found the drag brake doesnt always engage for some reason... |

If you guys don't beat me to it, I'll plug 4s into my 1080 after I get it unwrapped. I know it says 2s-3s, but that doesn't always mean that it won't accept higher. I ran my AE2 on 4s for awhile, and it says "2s only" right on it. I'd agree that rpm is what is more likely to kill a brushed motor than voltage alone. My titan 12t died pretty quick on 4s, but I've had some cheap sealed can, high turn motors (70t?) running on 3s/4s for almost 2 years now through a wp860 esc, so fingers crossed that the 1080 doesn't do a high voltage cut off on 4s.

Never know the 1080 can support 4s, really tempted to test mine. | |

Wah waaaah. I got to unwrap a couple things early, including a WP1080. It said no to my 4s. I plugged it in and the LED just kept flashing and won't send power to the motor. Plugged 3s in and it went back to normal operation. Oh well, it was worth a shot, no harm done.
