Sweet! That's a nicely designed piece of hardware, Castle is starting to style its products, the way Tekin does its high-end stuff. Oh, and I found out that the Holmes BWD Motor Sav'r only works on "normal" electric motors... LOLz. Last edited by durok; 03-05-2018 at 09:43 PM. |

Huh, surprisingly weak BEC. But then again, they make BECs. What's the other wire for? Fan power? |

All I can say is wow. Just very loosely chucked this into my wraith, and drove round the lounge... And it is wow. Its very similar in feel to my MX, which is also an amazing esc. It does however definitely need a BEC if using savoy servos. the SW4 is easily the most responsive sensorless esc I have ever used, And Ive been around.... Well done Castle, as to be expected I guess. I have this paired with a tenshock 1750kv 6pole and it's amazing. My wraith isn't built to be a true crawler so is geared more for jumps and dusty tracks, but the slow speed start up is phenomenal. Climbed all over my kitchen with our cogging. I am building a wroncho and this combo is going straight in. Sent from my LG-H870DS using Tapatalk FYI Sent from my LG-H870DS using Tapatalk Last edited by THX_138; 03-06-2018 at 09:54 PM. I'm thinking about going brushless in my vaterra twin hammers, glad I read this thread, I want a water proof combo for a basher/trail rig. I can see myself going sensor less with the SW4 and a cheaply BL motor now.

After using it a bit more, the bec is actually not bad, I'm running 3s with a savox servo and it's working fine. I don't think it would hold up for serious crawling but for bashing around its doing fine. It's much better then the sv3 bec. This being said I am going to hook up a bec just in case. I like that the SV4 has is smooth with sensorless motors, but IMO it's completely unacceptable to have a weak internal BEC these days. Robert@Castle said he fought to have a better internal BEC in this servo, but he was overuled by marketing/sales. Typical battle where engineering wants quality and sales/marketing wants a price point. I think the extra $5 (probably much less) for a better internal BEC would have made this a much better ESC.

It would have pushed the price up at least $15 or $20 retail to put a strong BEC inside. Its practically the same cost of components as a regular Castle BEC, minus PCB. There is also the issue of space inside the case, , heat shedding, and the MCU power to control it properly. They needed to hit a price point, it would have pushed it too close to the Mamba X. Rule number one of product development- don't make products that compete with your own products in price point or features. It makes purchase choices more difficult and erodes the "spread" between product lines. Marketing and engineering rarely agree. Companies can be 100% marketing with zero engineering and do very well (maxamps), companies that are 100% engineering can fail quickly without understanding of what the market wants. A balancing act is necessary to achieve a stable and progressive company. |

I'm always on one end of the engineering and marketing fight. Make it cheaper! No, I wanna make it better.
