No need for BEC or bypass harnesses .
Pretty simple to wire.

I have a question about the LVC on the 1080. I have yet run a battery down to have the LVC work. Does it cut the power or just momentarily drop it? I wonder because the kids don't have the same level of attention when it comes to running the RC cars. I have some older slashes without any LVC protection and they have ran batteries very low in the past. Now having LVC I wanted to know what to expect when it does kick in.

It cuts down on the power delivery but will still keep running veeeerrryyy slow

The norm is , quick burst of accel, then NO movement with throttle, servo wiggles. SOMETIMES another burst of accel.....

I know my 2200 3s will give me about :90 to 1:20 run time also

is the port on the 1080 work for a fan also?

I'm pretty sure it does work for a fan but I can't even get the ESC warm on a hot summer day doing donuts in the sand... No need for a fan

The lowest cut-off setting can put a lipo cell in danger level. Best to set it medium or high. I think the default is medium, but would have to verify that on the manual.
I also set peak volts to 95% of full charge voltage. Charge them at 1:1 C, put them at storage charge when idle - lipos just last longer this way.

Question for you guys,
I just started using one of these in a crawler, but i also have Tamiya and Kyosho 4wd racers.
This 1080 is stouted as a "crawler" esc, but would it be a good one to use in non crawler applications?

Yup
My bomber uses a hobbywing 1080, 550 21T motor and I spend most of my time at full throttle

Just check the excel file in the post and use the rock racer settings

Mostly lowest drag brake, slow drag brake rate and other minor tweaks

I completely agree with Browneye.... I actually set mine to "high" when I realized that it cuts off right at storage voltage, of course I verify this every time with cell checker, this way if you get busy or forget, you know your batts are at or really close to storage.

Chris, regarding 95% so does that mean you are only charging to 4.10v per cell vs 4.20? I've read about doing that, but never took the time to adjust the charger.

Jboucher, this is a great thread for us newbies to the HW 1080. Love the charting and your efforts to assist are well received.

I just purchased my first HW 1080 ESC and of course I was planning to install a external BEC. Thanks to your thread I won't be doing that which doesn't bother me in the least, Thanks for the effort!!!!!

One of our local crawler guys works for Hobbywing he really knows this 1080 inside and out. If you check out our local scaler club on FB he has an update vid. on almost all Tuesdays. I had one in each of my Rally cars and they worked great and thought they would be great in a scaler, tried one and bye bye Tekin. Sonoma county Scalers on FB.

I just installed a Hobbywing 1080 in my new TRX4 Sport kit, running it with stock 17/39 gearing and on 2S Lipo. I'm running an old Kyosho Magnetic Mayhem 22t forward rotation motor in it wired backwards while I'm waiting on a proper motor to come in. After a few minutes of Crawling both my motor and ESC were pretty hot to the touch.

I've been reading a lot about this ESC and most everyone says it runs cool, any idea what is causing my ESC to be so hot?

Could it be because I'm using a forward rotation motor wired backward?

Geared too high?

Could the Marine Grease I used in the drivetrain cause too much drag? (I didn't pack the tranny, transfer case or diffs, just put a coating on all the gear teeth.)

Anything else it could be?

Pretty sure that motor has 20deg timing, and is available in both rotations - so running a forward rotation model reversed is likely what the problem is.

If the motor is not a 550 size can, it may be too weak and overheating

Pretty certain the Kyosho Magnetic Mayhem motors were 22 turn single wound armatures in a "550" size can... but sold in both rotations.
