Since I run an 1800kv Revolver on 3S and 4S with the Mamba X, I would not be very entertained by the 3S cell count limit that HobbyWing places on their Axe ESC with only 1200kv to play with.

A 550 can size might make up for the reported lack of torque that the 540 Axe motors have compared to their competition.

I love the little HW 1080 brushed ESC, but will wait to check out the next generation of HobbyWings brushless crawler ESC - there's some nifty thinking going on with the Axe, but it still has a way to go for me performance-wise to seriously consider buying one.

Have you used one? They don't have the punch other motors have as far as doing burnouts, but for crawling in rocks the torque in my experience is second to none. That's all esc magic though adding power when resistance is encountered, pretty impressive IMO.

Granted I don't like the 3s limit and wouldent buy the 1200kv either. Just wait till the 2300kv is back in stock.

Going by the case length / stator ratio that the 540 axe has, the 550 will have a 20 or 21mm long stator. That’s considerably less motor than a 1410, pro4hd, or Puller 540. They could fit that much motor into the 540 housing if they wanted to. But I suppose “550” on the tag gets a price premium without many questions.

It looks like they will come with AXE550-3300kv and 2700KV combos. This is expected to come in this or next month according to Hobbywing.

Guys, does anyone has an experience installing Axe in heavy rig? My SCX10 II weights over 6.5kg (around 14.5lbs), I just finished build, it crawls like a demon, but 35T brushed motor just overheats every 10 minutes due to load. I was going to buy mamba X, but tested it and drag brake was not sufficient for that weight. Can 540 sized Axe motor withstand that level of load? I contacted HW via email, facebook etc, but still no answer

What motor, because I'm betting that's the issue. The Mamba X is a very good crawling ESC, the motor is usually what will affect the drag brake more.

If your gear your 14.5 lb down enough then there is no reason you cant use a 540 motor. The higher the gears are the easier it is to over heat and over come the drag brakes. A larger motor with stronger magnets like a torque master pro 550 will also help.
Edit: thought i was in a different thread, the axe drag break works no problem on my rigs but they are not that heavy, at 80:1 fdr it is stronger then I am willing to force it by twisting the tire. If I try to turn the spur by hand it just laughs at me.
I had a 10lbs scx10II that is 100:1 fdr with a stock axial 35t motor in it, on a mamba x, drag brake will hold any where the tires can no problem.

get a faster motor, more voltage, lower gears.

Gearing is 13T 32P / 56T. Castle motor was 1406 ~2300kv and ESC could not hold the drag brake on steep incline. I am still considering Axe 2300KV combo, if that has some kind of trouble i will move it to TRX4 and get 1800kv or mamba for SCX10 then :( Bluetooth and that level of control seems very attractive for scale crawling. But i hope brushless motor will still have much more torque than stock or cheap 540 brushed motor and wont overheat while crawling

At this point I would waite for the axe 3300kv 550 to come out and get a 9t pinion For that heavy pig.

I am currently running mamba x with hh puller pro 2700kv on my trx4 which is heavier than ur rig and it hold quite good. But since u have mamba x and how do u suppose u would connect hw axe foc sensor cable into mamba x? They r different, unless if u plan to buy the whole lot including esc.

You can’t
No adaptor for the two different designs. This is my major hang up with AXE, I’ve got lots of motors and esc’s with the normal ribbon style as Tekin, Castle, and Holmes all share.
