Can't get my Spektrum ds2e into program mode

I have 2 ds2e remotes that I cannot get into program mode. Trying to set the steering endpoints. Tried turning the wheel all the way right with full reverse, all the way left full reverse, both ways with full throttle, and all 4 combos with throttle and steering both in normal and reverse, and all 4 combos with throttle and steering trim centered, all the way right, and all the way left. All with vehicle on, and off. Tried with 2 receivers and after like 100 attempts, starting to think somehow mine just aren't gonna go into program mode. No idea what year these were made, as I got them used. Is there a certain year these remotes were made that don't have this option? Had no issues with my ttx300. Time to upgrade?
