Hot esc (hobbywing 1040)

Changed the battery and felt the heat coming off it and about after 5 seconds of touching it, it became to hot. Only had it running for 20 mins if that. Could it be from a bad wire somewhere in the lighting kit. I hate electrical issues!!

A little more information would be helpful! Like, what truck is this in, how are you driving it, what size batteries are you running, etc, etc. Help us, help you!

Driving a carisma coyote had a 5000mah. 50c and was just doing some crawling no bashing. Also has 1.9 tires on it.

How old is the battery, I would take it to a local shop and have them test it/inspect it. Do you balance the battery?

Is it the battery or esc getting hot? You say "it" a bit often and I don't know what you're referring to.

If you think it's the lights just disconnect them and see if it is still getting hot. That's the best way to test, eliminate the variables.

Could be the servo too. I've had servos fail and after swapping it out the ESC was just fine.

Re: Hot esc (hobbywing 1040)

I bought everything 3 months ago. Only have had maybe 20 hrs of play. And no I don't have a battery balancer. The servo works just fine I think for a stock little servo. Not sure the rating on it. Carisma seems shady when giving out specs on things. And the esc gets hot. The battery gets a little warm when it's about dead.

What's a good inexpensive balancer for nimh 5-6 cells. Reading up has me kinda nervous charging batteries now especially with little ones in the house.

Balancer for a Nimh battery ??? I would check about the lights and the servo ...wp1040 isnt the strongest in the BEC department ;)

Re: Hot esc (hobbywing 1040)

If your just using a nimh battery, then theres no need for a balance charge, thats for lipos. Even at that, i use lipo safe bags for chargin n storage. Just dont leave it chargin n walk off (just for safety sake). I charge mine in the kitchen on top of the stove.

U said u just bought everything 3 months ago... I understand theyre new, but take in consideration theyre electronics. U could put in a new servo n it may last u 2 yrs, but u could put in a new one n it quit in 5 mins. Id do as suggested above n try eliminating the problem. Try unpluggin the lights, then try swappin with another servo. It could b somethin simple. Wat servo are u runnin? It may be to much for the esc n u may need a external bec. Wat truck u runnin? Motor? Gearing? Gearin can make the esc get hot as well. The more info u give about your truck, the easier it is for us to help u. Hope this helps u to fix your issue n get back to havin fun

Re: Hot esc (hobbywing 1040)

A hot esc usually means there is too much amp draw going through it. Wheather it is the servo pulling too many amps or the motor, or the lights.

Partial throttle is the hardest on an esc, They literally swicth te motor on an off to maintain slower speeds. So using a crawler with a esc that is near its limit, and you have a hot esc.

Re: Hot esc (hobbywing 1040)

ok i have a external bec coming tomm and i didnt have a the lights plugged in at the time just the light bar. i have to check the gears in the transmission. i had just replaced it and just noticed this. could the gears in the transmission be fighting with the gears in the axles?

maybe i can swap gears from the previous transmission.??

and im running a carisma coyote."thumbsup"

you could have the gear mesh to tight

Re: Hot esc (hobbywing 1040)

Check if you can easily spin the wheels without the motor in? You shouldn’t have much tension and it should turn over easily enough. The car should roll by itself almost.

With all my 1040’s and 1060’s I’ve had heat problems without an external bec. Even with 10kg servos on them. I just wire a silly old 3A hobbywing switch-mode ubec and it solves the problem. Some of my friends also had random heat problems with their rtr 1040/60’s and the external bec fixed it.

thanks everyone for the info its a big help with being a noob and trying to figure it out. have a pretty general idea but backing from the community is always great. and i had to clip the on/off switch it burnt out. i dont think that had to do with it. and yes it rolls pretty easily and i did no adjustments when or after installing the tranny. and whats gear mesh. there is a slipper clutch pre installed
